How to Fix a LG TV That Won’t Turn On

LG smart TVs come at a hefty price, so it’s frustrating to experience any kind of problems with them.

If your LG TV won’t turn on, there are several troubleshooting methods you can try to get it working again.

Why Won’t My LG TV Turn On?

I love my LG television. But, there have been a couple of times when I get home at the end of the day, press the power button, and nothing happens.

Before you can troubleshoot an LG TV that won’t turn on, you’ll need to find the source of the problem. Some of the most common reasons your LG TV won’t turn on include:

Power supply issues
Damaged wires
Hardware failures

Whatever the cause, it’s usually pretty easy to fix.

Power Supply Issues

Almost every time my TV hasn’t turned on when I pressed the power button, it was due to some kind of power issue.

This is the most common cause, so it’s a good place to begin troubleshooting.

Use the Power Button on the TV

I always use the power button on the remote to turn my LG TV on. But, if you haven’t tried using the power button on the TV, the issue might actually be with your remote.

Try walking up to the TV and turning it on. If it works, your remote might need new batteries, or you may need to do some troubleshooting to solve the problem.

Change Outlets

If you know the problem is with the TV and not your remote, try switching the power outlet the TV is plugged into. If you are using a surge protector, be sure to check that as well.

If there are any issues with the outlet you have been using, your LG TV will not power on.

Restart the TV

Restarting a device sometimes clears temporary glitches, like a TV that won’t turn on.

To fully restart your LG TV, unplug the power cord, then press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. This will drain all the remaining power from the TV. Wait another 10 seconds, then plug the TV back in.

When you turn the TV on again, press the button on the TV rather than the one on the remote control.

Soft Reset the TV

Sometimes, LG TVs will freeze and a black screen will appear. This will make it look like there is no power being sent to the TV.

If you can see the power indicator light on your TV, but the TV screen is black and doesn’t respond to button presses, it’s a good idea to reset it. Unplug your LG TV for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.

Damaged Wires

After ruling out power supply issues, the next step you should take is inspecting the wires.

Look at the power cord and check for any signs of damage, such as:

Kinks
Frayed wires
Bent electrical connectors

Damage to your LG TV’s power cord disrupts the flow of power. If you see any signs of damage, replace the power cord as soon as possible.

Hardware Failure

Things like a short circuit can damage your LG TV. If this happens, your TV may stop working entirely. The following steps might not be for everyone, but if you are capable, give it a shot.

To diagnose this issue, you need to check the motherboard:

Unplug the TV from the wall outlet.
Remove the back casing from the TV.
Find and remove the motherboard.
Check the motherboard for warping or burns.
If you don’t see any visible damage, use a multimeter to ensure the motherboard outputs the correct voltage.

Unless you have experience with TV repair, I recommend having a professional do this for you. In some cases, you’ll be able to replace the motherboard and your TV will work like new again.

Other times, you may need to purchase a brand-new TV.
