There is nothing worse than getting the latest smart home device you’ve been waiting for, only to have issues getting it to connect to your home Wi-Fi! If you’ve been experiencing this issue with your new Google Nest Audio, you’re probably already aware that you aren’t alone. So, why does the Google Nest Audio keep disconnecting?

The Google Nest Audio may not have updated correctly when first installed, which will cause the device to abruptly disconnect from the Google Home app or your home Wi-Fi network. Performing a factory reset will correct this issue but may also require added troubleshooting to fully address the problem.

In this article, you’ll learn everything you need to know about these software updates, and how to perform a factory reset to correct the problem!

Why Your Nest Audio May Have Not Updated Correctly

Your Nest Audio speaker may disconnect due to issues with communicating with your Wi-Fi network. If you are experiencing issues on multiple smart home devices, you may need to follow a process to correct Wi-Fi connectivity issues.

When you first install your Google Nest Audio and connect it to your Wi-Fi network, it uses Space-time block Coding (STBC) to find multiple internet streams with the best copy of data to install required updates.

Some Wi-Fi routers have an interoperability issue with Google Home that causes download delay for the initial Over The Air update. This can cause your Nest Audio to repeatedly disconnect from Wi-Fi. The following models of Wi-Fi routers are known to experience this issue:

  • Asus RT_AC66U or RT_AC68W
  • Buffalo WZR_D1800H
  • TPLink Archer C7 v1 or v2
  • Netgear R6100, 6200, or 6300

If you have one of these models, performing a factory data reset is recommended, the instructions for which are provided in the next section.

Your Nest Audio May Require A Reset

If your Nest Audio is receiving a reliable Wi-fi signal and continues to disconnect, the Nest Audio may have failed to update properly during installation or need to be restored to its default settings. Additionally, you may need to update the Google Home app on your device to make sure you are running a version of Google Home that supports the Nest Audio.

In this section, we go into how to tell if your Google Nest audio did not perform a software update, and how to perform a factory data reset to fix connectivity issues.

Performing A Factory Data Reset On Nest Audio

If you are not running the latest version of the Google Home app the Nest Audio can disconnect randomly while leaving your other smart home devices functioning normally. You can check for software updates in your device’s Play Store, where it will prompt you to update the app if you are not currently running the latest version.

If the latest version of Google Home is already installed, your Wi-Fi connection is good, and the Nest Audio is the only device experiencing connectivity issues, you will need to perform a factory data reset. This reset must be done manually and cannot be completed using voice commands or via the Google Home App.

To perform a factory reset, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn off the mic switch on the back of the Nest Audio
  2. Wait for the LED indicator to turn orange,
  3. Press the top center of the Nest Audio and hold
  4. At five seconds, the device will begin the reset process. Do not release the top center.
  5. Hold down the top center for another ten seconds until you the speaker makes a sound to show the factory reset is complete.
  6. Turn the mic switch back on and reconnect to the Google Home App

If the Nest Audio does not make a noise to show the reset is completed or does not respond to voice commands after the reset, you will need to perform the troubleshooting process below:

  1. Unplug your Nest Audio from the power outlet
  2. Wait ten seconds
  3. Plug Nest Audio in and wait for all four LED indicators to light up
  4. Repeat the above steps ten times.
  5. When you plug the Nest Audio back in the final time, the device will need a few minutes to reset.

The reset is complete when the speaker announces, “Welcome to Google Home. To get started, download the Google Home app on a phone or tablet.”
