The Ecobee Smart Thermostat is a great gadget to have at your side. However, there may come a time when Ecobee fails to heat or cool your home properly, connect to Wi-Fi, or function properly.
Here’s how you can rest your Ecobee Thermostat and solve the problem once and for all.
How to Reset an Ecobee Thermostat
It’s easy to reset any model of Ecobee Thermostat. Resetting your thermostat will restore it to factory settings, deleting your stored settings and preferences.
If you’re ready to take the plunge and set your thermostat up like new again, follow the steps below:
- Access the Main Menu on your ecobee Thermostat’s interface.
- Select the “Settings” icon.
- Select “Settings” again from the list.
- Choose “Reset.”
- Press “Reset All.”
- Enter the access code.
Can I Reset an Ecobee Thermostat Without an Access Code?
If you bought your Ecobee Thermostat used, you might not have the proper access code to perform the reset process. Luckily, there’s a way around it.
To reset your thermostat without the access code, find the hardware reset button at the top-left of the unit. Press and hold it for about five seconds to begin the factory reset.
If you do not see a button (mine does not have one), you will need to log into the ecobee.com turn the access code requirement off from there.
Reset HVAC Equipment Settings
After factory resetting your Ecobee Thermostat, you’ll have the option to reset your HVAC Equipment settings. This will reset:
- Sensor configuration
- Threshold settings
- Heat pump settings
- Other smart thermostat equipment
After selecting “Reset All,” hit “Reset HVAC Equipment Settings” to reset these settings.
Reset Contractor Information
Resetting your Ecobee Thermostat’s contractor information will reset any information programmed by the contractor who installed your unit.
After factory resetting your thermostat, choose “Reset Contractor Info.” This is especially useful if the contractor who installed your unit altered the way your device was configured.
Can You Reset an Ecobee Thermostat’s Settings?
If you don’t want to completely reset your Ecobee Thermostat, there are other options. Resetting your Ecobee Thermostat’s settings will reset:
- Your location
- The date and time
- Preset temperature ranges
- Heating/cooling schedules
- Your Wi-Fi network
Unlike a factory reset, it won’t deregister your thermostat from the Ecobee app. Here’s how you can reset your Ecobee Thermostat’s settings:
- Open your thermostat’s Main Menu.
- Choose the “Settings icon”then “Settings” again.
- Find and select the Reset option.
- Select “Reset Schedule and Preferences.”
Reset Your Ecobee Thermostats Registration
Resetting the registration on your Ecobee Thermostat allows you to change the email address linked to the account and re-register with a different email address:
- Open your Ecobee thermostat’s Main Menu.
- Choose the “Settings icon”then “Settings” again.
- Press “Reset.”
- Select “Reset Registration.”
This is handy if you bought the device used and need to register the device to your own email address.
Why Reset an Ecobee Thermostat?
There are many times when you’ll need to reset your Ecobee Thermostat. It’s helpful when:
- A power outage has affected the way your thermostat functions
- You can’t connect your thermostat to Wi-Fi
- You’re experiencing technical issues traditional troubleshooting won’t solve
- You’re transferring your thermostat to a new owner
- You received a used Ecobee Thermostat
Keep in mind if you want to sell your Ecobee Thermostat, you’ll have to not only reset the registration, but also the schedule and preferences.
Can You Reset Ecobee Sensors?
If your Ecobee Sensors keep disconnecting from your thermostat or give incorrect temperature readings, resetting them can help. Here’s how to reset an Ecobee Sensor:
- Gently remove the circular backplate from the back of your Ecobee Sensor.
- Remove the circular battery from the battery slot.
- Gently lift the prongs in the middle of the battery slot.
- Place the battery positive side down in the battery slot. Leave it there for about 30 seconds.
- Remove the battery again, then place it back in the battery slot positive side up.
- Replace the backplate onto your Ecobee Sensor.
Can You Reset an Ecobee Thermostat Remotely?
Technically, resetting your thermostat can only be done through manual adjustments on the Ecobee interface. You can, however, remove the thermostat from your account on the Ecobee app:
- Open the Ecobee app.
- Choose the thermostat you’d like to reset.
- Tap “Main Menu” (or settings).
- Choose “Device Settings.”
- Select “Remove Device.”
- Tap the red Remove Device icon at the bottom of the app.
While you can control many features through the Ecobee app, it’s not yet possible to reset the thermostat remotely.
