Amazon’s line of Echo Show devices provides its owners with amazing in-home convenience. You can use your Echo Show to listen to music, check your schedule for the day, or even video call your friends and family! These tiny devices are the perfect replacement for your old alarm clock, but many people wonder: do they have a built-in battery?
Currently, none of the Echo Show devices can run on battery without an external source. Furthermore, the only Echo Show device that currently offers users the choice to purchase an included battery base is the Echo Show 8. If you have an Echo Show 5 or 10, you’ll have to buy a separate battery base or power bank to run the device on battery power.
Below, we’ll discuss more information on running each of these devices on battery power. Read everything below before you purchase an Echo Show!
What the Echo Show Has to Offer
No matter which Echo Show version you purchase, you’ll enjoy many of the same capabilities. Some of the things you can do with your device include:
- Set an alarm
- Stream video
- Listen to music
- Check the weather and the news
- Make and receive video calls with anyone who owns an Echo device
In addition, the Echo Show can also connect with and control compatible Smart Home devices! It includes a built-in camera with motion detection technology, and you can even set it up to turn on the lights, thermostat, and more as soon as you walk into the room.
As far as security goes, you can use the Alexa app to view your camera from anywhere, even when you’re not home. For added protection, you have the option to open and close the camera shutter as needed.
With all these features and more, Echo Show users can enjoy the convenience of an easily-controllable smart home. But, to make the device portable, you’ll need to connect a separate battery base or power bank.
Battery Options for the Echo Show 5, 8, and 10
Without an external source, all the Echo Show devices need to be plugged in with the included power adapter in order to function. Unlike some similar devices, there is no built-in battery source.
Thankfully, there are ways to power the Echo Show 5, 8, and 10 with a battery. However, each device will use a different battery source. The Echo Show 8 offers an option to purchase the device with a battery base, while the other two models have battery packs that need to be purchased separately.
The Echo Show 5
The Amazon Echo Show 5 is one of the older Echo Show models. There is currently no option to purchase the device with a battery base included, but you can purchase one separately.
The GGMM ES5 battery base is compatible with the Echo Show 5. It securely attaches magnetically to the bottom of your device. This base even allows you to adjust the angle, making it easy to see the screen no matter where you are in a room.
You will need to charge the base once the power runs out. However, the power will last for hours and allow you to take your Echo Show 5 anywhere, even if there’s no power outlet in sight.
The Echo Show 8
The Echo Show 8 is the only device out of these three that offers the option to purchase a battery base with the device. This tiltable base attaches securely to your device, no tools necessary, and can power your Echo Show for up to four hours before another charge is needed.
If you already own the Echo Show 8, but do not have the optional battery base, you can purchase one separately. The base attaches to the device in the same way, and offers up to four hours of battery power.
The Echo Show 10
Like the Echo Show 5, the Echo Show 10 is not available with an included battery base. Unfortunately, due to the device’s design, there’s no way to attach a separate battery base either.
However, you do have one option: a portable power bank. You’ll need a USB cord to connect it to the device. Once plugged in, it gives you up to 6 hours of battery life before it will need to be charged again.
The Bottom Line
At this point in time, none of the Echo Show devices have a backup battery installed. However, there are ways to power your Echo Show from anywhere, even if your device is set up outside or away from any walls.
The Echo Shows 5 and 8 have removable battery bases available, and you can even purchase the Echo Show 8 with this base included. The Echo Show 10, however, can only be powered without a cord if you purchase a portable power bank.
