Taking Your Nest Cam on Vacation
Overall, it’s pretty easy to take your Nest Cam on vacation with you. This is great news because you can feel comfortable wherever you are to make sure you and your family are safe.
It can also be helpful for indoor use if traveling with an animal or kids that need to be checked on. Nest Cams can double as a baby monitor for your vacation!
When taking your Nest Cam on vacation, be sure to take all parts necessary and to pack it somewhere it will not get lost or damaged. This way, you can go home and set it up just how you wanted it back at home again.
Be aware that you will have to delete the app and set up the camera to the new location. Then you’ll be ready to use your Nest Cam at your vacation destination.
Does the Nest Cam Work if Wifi Goes Out?
Great, we now know that we can take our security camera with us on vacation to feel safe in a new environment. However, Wifi signals can be spotty when in a new place or may not be working the whole time. So, does the Nest Cam even still work if the Wifi goes out?
The short answer to this question is yes. If the Wifi signal is unreliable or loses connection for a little while, the camera footage is stored locally to be uploaded and viewed later.
However, this does mean that you would not be able to view the live footage right then on your app. This means that the footage would be stored straight to the cameraand then uploaded to the app when reconnected to the Wifi signal for viewing.
How Long Do Nest Cameras Keep Video Footage Without Nest Aware?
Nest Aware is a subscription service you can have when owning a Nest Cam. With this subscription service, it has the option for you to hold onto 60 days’ worth of footage at a time.
Whereas if you don’t have this subscription, footage can be lost even after just 3 hours. Whether you purchase the subscription or not depends on how long you would like to keep the footage on your phone and if you value being able to look back a while.
Of the 60 day footage you get with Nest Aware, this includes 10 days of 24/7 video history. This means that the 60 days is event video history. This is footage taken only when a sound or movement is detected to be recorded. The Nest Aware may be a good investment if you want to hold onto 24/7 video footage for longer than 3 hours at a time.
Can You Use a Nest Camera in a Hotel Room?
Yes, you should be able to use your Nest Camera in a hotel room using the hotel Wifi. In order to do this, set up your device as a new device in the app and install the camera like you would at home.
Make sure to enter the Wifi password given to you by the hotel in order to use it. However, entering the password may be an issue for some and may require a travel router to use.
Make sure to do your research on the specific hotel and what is needed to access Wifi. You can also call and ask the service desk at the hotel if the Wifi network will be accessible for your security camera. Using a Nest Cam at an Airbnb or a rental should not be a problem as long as internet access is provided to you and available from the owner of the property.
Final Thoughts
You can absolutely take your Nest Cam on vacation with you. And in fact, you should! Why not?! It takes a little time to remove the camera and uninstall/reinstall the app, but it’s not too complicated. And really, anything to make your vacation run smooth is time well spent.
