How to Transfer Ownership of Your SimpliSafe Devices

A home security system like the one from SimpliSafe can be a great help in your home. However, there may come a time that you no longer need your existing setup. There are many reasons someone may want to transfer ownership of a SimpliSafe Home Security System, including:

  • Moving out of your home and leaving the installed security system behind
  • Renting out a property that has the system installed
  • Selling your SimpliSafe Security system
  • Upgrading to a new model

No matter what your situation is, the transfer of ownership is easy and does not require any complex technical knowledge. Your devices can be used by a new owner without compromising your information or security. They will not be using your account, but instead will be able to start fresh with their own.

To transfer ownership of your SimpliSafe devices, you must first cancel any active monitoring services you are subscribed to. You can request this cancellation by calling the SimpliSafe customer service line at 1-800-548-9508.

When you are listening to the automated menu, Select Option 2. You will be connected to a customer service representative. Provide this person with your phone number, home address, and Safe Word so they can pull up your information and help you with transferring ownership.

When you transfer a device to a new owner, it’s crucial to protect your private information. It is recommended that you change your pin to a default passcode (like 0000) before handing the device over. Here is how to reset your PIN.

Also, when you request a cancellation of services with SimpliSafe, it is important to note that the action will be immediate. Your device will stop monitoring your home after you hang up with your phone call. You should only make this request when you are completely ready to deactivate your home security system. A good idea is to cancel your account the day you are moving out of your home.

After you cancel your monitoring services, the new owner can activate their own new account with SimpliSafe and set up monthly monitoring services. They must register for an account online or call customer service. Then, they will need to provide the serial number printed on the bottom of the Base Station.

If the new owner has had SimpliSafe Monitoring in the past, it’s ideal for them to call customer service, rather than go through these steps online. A customer service rep can reactivate and update any existing information in their system.

The new owner will be asked to provide new credit card information for their monitoring fees. He or she will also be able to set up their own Safe Word and disarm codes for the devices. All of your monitoring settings, however, will remain stored in the Base Station’s memory.

If the home has multiple SimpliSafe devices set up (like a video doorbell or smart lock), you will not need to provide SimpliSafe with each serial number to set them up. All other devices in the home will have their serial numbers stored in the Base Station’s memory, which means they will all stay registered to it as a group.

Transferring ownership of your SimpliSafe devices is even easier if you did not set up monitoring services. This is because no cancellation is required. In this case, you should be able to simply leave the system for the new owner to set up with their own account.

Activating New Monitoring Services with SimpliSafe

When the new owner is ready to activate monitoring services, they’ll need to choose a service plan. SimpliSafe offers two monthly plans that allow your home security system to monitor your home, alert you of a break-in, and dispatch police to your home in an emergency. Here are your options:

  • Standard Plan: about $15 per month and includes 24/7 live monitoring, a cellular connection, and environmental monitoring
  • Interactive Plan: about $25 per month and includes everything in the Standard plan plus access to the mobile app with alerts to your smartphone, video alarm verification,  unlimited video recording, and integrations with other smart home devices

Neither plan requires a contract; you pay on a month-to-month basis and can cancel at any time.

When it is time for the new owner to set up an account, follow these easy steps:

  1. Download the SimpliSafe app on your smartphone and log in, or visit SimpliSafe.com/activate and log in. Use the email address you used to place your order or create a new account.
  2. If you are on a web browser, follow the instructions to set up a new device. If you are using the app, select Activate Monitoring and follow the steps on the screen.
  3. You will need the serial number on the Base Station to set up your device and a credit card to set up monthly services.
