Although each Ring device has its own specific function and purpose, sometimes it may be hard to tell the difference between some of them. Take the Ring Chime Pro and the Ring Range Extender, for example; if you aren’t a tech expert, it may be hard to grasp the differences between the two.

The Ring Chime Pro is a Wi-Fi extender and notification hub but is only compatible with the Ring doorbells and cameras. The Ring Range Extender keeps your Ring devices connected to the Base Station if they are far away but is only compatible with devices apart from your Ring Alarm System because they use z-wave.

So, the Ring Chime Pro works with your Ring cameras and doorbells that use Wi-Fi, while the Ring Range Extender works with your Ring alarm devices that use z-wave. It’s a fairly simple concept, but there is much more to learn about these devices before using them. Continue reading to get the best information on these products.

Note that the Ring Chime Pro is only compatible with Ring products and does not work as a Wi-Fi extender for any other devices in your home that are not powered by Ring.

Ring Range Extender

The Ring Range Extender is another great addition to consider when purchasing your Ring products. If you use the Ring Alarm system, a Ring Range Extender should be your next investment.

The Ring Range Extender does exactly as its name suggests; it extends the range of your Ring devices in your home to guarantee there are no dead spots or places connection could be lost.

According to Ring support, the Ring Range Extender can be placed up to 250 feet away from the Base Station. After that, the Ring Range Extender can also be placed up to another 250 feet away from other Ring Alarm devices in the opposite direction. This creating an additional 500-foot extension provided by the Ring Range Extender.

The Ring Range Extender is ideal for large homes where dead spots can be more prominent due to security devices being further apart. However, the Range Extender can be beneficial in any sized home by being creating a guaranteed connection.

Ring Range Extender Features

The Ring Range Extender makes a major contribution to the Ring Alarm System. Although it isn’t a security device in itself, it makes sure that your actual security devices will always be up and running.

Here are all of the features the Ring Range Extender has to offer:

  • Extends range by 500 feet (can be placed 250 feet from Base Station and then an additional 250 feet from other alarm devices)
  • Has a backup battery that 24 lasts up to 24 hours
  • Plugs into any standard wall outlet within your home
  • Easy and straightforward self-setup

Devices the Ring Range Extender is Compatible With

The Ring Range Extender is compatible with all of the devices that are a part of the Ring Alarm System. The Ring Alarm System and the Ring Range Extender both use z-wave instead of Wi-Fi, which is why they are only compatible with one another and not the other Ring products mentioned for the Chime Pro.

A Ring Alarm Base Station is required for the Range Extender to do its job. The Base Station is the hub for all of your Ring Alarm devices, similar to a router, and is what the Range Extender connects devices to.

All the other devices will be able to function as long as you have a Base Station, and the Ring Range Extender will be able to connect them all back to it.

Here is a list of all of the Ring Alarm System devices that the Ring Range Extender is compatible with:

  • Base Station (Necessary for connecting the other devices through the Range Extender)
  • Keypad
  • Contact Sensor
  • Motion Detector
  • Ring Retrofit Alarm Kit
  • Alarm Flood and Freeze Sensor
  • Smoke and CO Listener
  • Panic Button

In Summary

So, before investing in new Ring products, it is important to do some research because it can get tricky to understand exactly what they are used for.

The Ring Chime Pro and the Ring Range Extender seem to have similar basic functions: strengthening your network for your Ring devices. Although that is the case, they actually have very different features, and the main difference is their compatibility with other Ring devices.

Be sure to evaluate which Ring devices you already own to determine if you should get a Ring Chime Plus or Ring Range Extender. If you already have not only the Alarm System but the Ring Doorbell and cameras as well, then investing in both the Ring Chime Plus and the Ring Range Extender could benefit you.
