Smart home manufacturer Ring has announced that as of March 29th 2023, a Ring Protect subscription will be required for new users to access features of their Ring Alarm app system. Existing Ring Alarm owners will keep their full functionality without a plan.

Newly paid features include being able to arm and disarm Ring systems through the app or a voice assistant; alarm notifications; home automation functions; alarm history; and customized Home and Away modes for Ring cameras.

Ring Protect plans range from $4 per month for a single doorbell or camera, to $20 per month for unlimited devices and a professional home monitoring plan.

Ring’s website assures users that any systems sold prior to March 29th, 2023 “will continue to have the same in-app features (with or without a subscription) for the expected life of the device.”
