Back in 2016, Google released it’s first Google Assistant powered smart speaker in an attempt to rival the Amazon Echo. Since then, the Google smart displays have become popular in homes across the world. Although releases have dwindled in comparison to the many iterations of smart displays from Amazon, there have been a couple of generations (and a host of name changes) for the Nest Hubs.
The easiest way to factory reset your nest hub in the event of any issue is to hold the two volume buttons on the rear of the device for 10 seconds.
Once set up, the Nest Hubs tend to sit happily in a corner of your room, replying to commands and streaming music or video to your hearts content. However, there may be occasion where things stop working as expected, and resetting may be the only solution.
Nest Hubs rely heavily on your wifi network, so unplugging the device itself so that it re-establishes a connection may be the best place to start. Failing that, you may want to try restarting your router as this can often be the solution to any connectivity problems.
How to Reset Your Nest Hub or Nest Max
Regardless of whether you have the nest hub or it’s larger sibling (the Nest Hub Max) the process for resetting it is the same.
Has your WiFi network changed?
If for whatever reason you’ve changed your WiFi name or password, you will need to connect to the new WiFi before you can use your Nest Hub. Unfortunately, there is no setting to do this without resetting the device entirely:
- Press and hold both volume buttons on the rear of your device to initiate a factory reset (see picture above).
- Open the Google Home app and tap “Devices”
- Tap the “+” button
- Select “New devices”
- Select the relevant home
- The Google Home App will then search for new devices
- Your device should appear in a list, select the device and continue through the setup
Your device isn’t functioning properly, but your network remains the same
If your device isn’t functioning as it should, you can return it to it’s original “ready to setup” state using the following steps:
- Open the Google Home app and tap “Devices”
- Find the device that you want to reset and tap it
- Tap the settings cog in the top right of the screen
- Scroll to the bottom of the settings and tap “Remove device”
- Tap “remove”, your display should then show the “ready to setup” screen.
- Follow from step 3 of the section above this list (also shown below):
- Tap the “+” button
- Select “New devices”
- Select the relevant home
- The Google Home App will then search for new devices
- Your device should appear in a list, select the device and continue through the setup
If this doesn’t work try factory resetting as detailed above.
If You Can’t Reset Your Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max
If holding the volume buttons down for ten seconds doesn’t reset your Nest Hub, you’re unfortunately into an area where you may need some support from Google.
One suggestion is to power off (by pulling the power cord out the back of the hub) and leave it off for ten seconds. Repeat this process ten further times (eleven in total) and the device should return to its setup state.
Why You Should Reset Your Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max
It can be quite daunting to factory reset your Nest Hub, but the setup process for adding a Nest Hub to Google Home is usually very straightforward, and your device can be back up and running in very little time.
Google are probably quite aware of this fact, which is why their product support team will often recommend this as the main course of action for any issue.
