Your rows stay the same color when you update your dropdown menu. You can set up conditional formatting to change the row color automatically based on your selection.

  1. Select the range of cells where you want the colors to change.
  2. Go to the Format menu and select Conditional formatting [1:28].
  3. Click Add a rule to create a new formatting condition [1:38].
  4. Select Custom formula is from the formatting rules dropdown menu [1:54].
  5. Enter the formula =$E5="A" (replacing the cell and value with your own) to target your specific dropdown choiceb
  6. Choose your preferred background color for that value and click Done [2:45].
  7. Repeat this process for every other option in your dropdown list by adding a new rule for each one [3:03].
  8. If you need to add more rows later, click on the rule in your conditional formatting sidebar, select Add another range, and highlight the new rows [3:56].

Ninja Tip: You can quickly apply colors to entire columns or specific headers by locking the column reference with a dollar sign in your formula, like =$E5. This keeps the formatting consistent even if you add or delete columns later.

If the formatting fails to update, check that your rule range matches your dataset by going to Format > Conditional formatting > Apply to range.
