Wyze smart locks are a great way to keep your home safe and secure. However, like most smart home devices, they rely on an internet connection for hands-free functions. If you can’t access your internet, can you still lock and unlock your door? Will the Wyze Lock work without wifi?

The Wyze Lock connects to your smartphone using a Bluetooth connection but uses your home wifi network to do so. You will need to connect the Wyze Lock and the provided Gateway to a wifi network for set-up. However, if you are unable to connect to your wifi network, you can use other methods to manually control your Wyze Lock.

It’s certainly a relief to know that if we lose wifi connection, we can still lock and unlock the door. Now we need to get into possible fixes for a poor network connection, and what to do if the wifi network is down to use the Wyze Lock. Let’s get into it!

Wyze Lock Connection Troubleshooting

If your Wyze Lock is not connecting properly to your wifi network, you have multiple options to correct the problem. In this section, we’ve provided some troubleshooting tips to reestablish your wifi connection.

Change The Batteries

The first option you should attempt is replacing the batteries in your Lock. Defective batteries may be causing loss of power to the Lock, rendering it unable to connect to your wifi network. Changing the batteries out for a fresh set may correct the issue, even if they are new.

Power Cycle Your Lock and Smartphone

Running your smartphone and your Lock through a power cycle may reconnect the device to your network. Power cycle your phone first, then power cycle the Lock using the instructions below:

  1. Remove battery cover
  2. Take one battery out of the device
  3. Wait a few moments, then replace the battery
  4. The Lock will now reboot and reconnect automatically to the Gateway

Gateway Connection Troubleshooting

You may have a poor connection to the Gateway. This occurs when the Gateway is too far away from your Wyze Lock. Before putting the Gateway through the setup process, try moving the Gateway to an outlet somewhere closer to the Lock’s location.

Also, try power cycling the Gateway by unplugging the device, waiting 5 minutes, then plugging it back in. If this doesn’t work, putting the Gateway through the setup process may fix the problem.

To set your Gateway up again, follow the instructions below:

  1. Unplug the Gateway at least 5 minutes before Step 4
  2. Open the Wyze app
  3. Turn on Bluetooth(Motorola users may need to turn on GPS)
  4.  Plug the Gateway in
  5. Select Home in the Wyze app
  6. Select the plus sign in the top left
  7. Select Add Device
  8. Select Home
  9. Select Wyze Lock Gateway
  10. Press and hold Reset until LED flashes blue/red if needed
  11. Confirm the Gateway
  12. Enter Wifi login information
  13. The light will turn green when complete

Perform the Set-Up Process Again

If the troubleshooting methods above fail to reestablish a wifi connection to your Lock, you may need to repeat the entire setup process with your Lock. We recommend referencing the instructions provided by Wyze with the Lock, or by going to the manufacturer’s website for full instructions.

What To Do When You Cannot Connect To Wifi

If you can’t access your wifi due to issues unrelated to the Lock or gateway such as an outage, you can still use the Lock. The key provided with your deadbolt will still work to manually unlock and lock the door because the Wyze Lock doesn’t interfere with the mechanics or key function. You can also use the Bluetooth connection for the Lock in the Wyze app to use the Lock features.

However, using the Auto-Lock and Unlock features will not be possible without a wifi connection. Wyze uses a two-step verification process that requires both your Bluetooth and wifi network to identify you. The Lock also uses these connections to enable geofencing to track your location to Auto Unlock and Lock the door.
