Fire Cube Ethernet speed is a quality of the Fire Cube system that can affect your connectivity. If you’re looking for a replacement for your WiFi streaming services, Fire Cube Ethernet may not necessarily be the solution you’re looking for due to its relatively low speed.
The Ethernet adapter on the Fire Cube only gets an Ethernet speed of up to 100 megabytes-per-second (Mbps), or 70 Mbps after allowing for electrical interference. This speed should be enough for most people to use streaming services unless using bandwidth on several devices simultaneously.

What Is the Fire Cube Ethernet Speed?
The Ethernet speed for Fire Cube is 100 Mbps, or 70 Mbps after you account for interference. While this might not seem like much compared to many newer IT devices, a good solid Internet connection runs between 50 and 100 Mbps, with a minimum of 25 Mbps for good connectivity.
So what does this mean for Fire Cube users? It means that as long as you’re using a dedicated Ethernet for your Fire Cube, you should have no problems with smooth, constant Internet connectivity while using your Fire Cube. The exception is if you have many other wireless devices running off the same network and using the same bandwidth.
The more devices you have on the network, the slower your connection will ultimately run. This is what is known as decreased latency, or ping.
Why Doesn’t Fire Cube Have Gigabit Ethernet?
Gigabit Internet services such as those advertised by Google Fiber are useful for advanced media services such as the following:
- 4K resolution
- High-definition (HD) streaming
- Fast media download speeds
For those who have invested a lot of time and energy into their entertainment center, a faster Ethernet speed may be worth the installation. However, you can’t use a Gigabit Ethernet cord with the Fire Cube. In many cases, the Gigabit Internet connection is also restricted by transmission protocols within the Internet router, limiting its effectiveness.
Fire Cube doesn’t have a Gigabit connection because it’s restricted by the type of Ethernet hookup on the device. The Fire Cube doesn’t have a dedicated Ethernet port. Instead, if you want to hook up an Ethernet to your Fire Cube, you have to use a micro-USB 2.0 connector that is only rated up to 480 Mbps.
While some smart home devices such as Roku feature a GIG Ethernet connection which can achieve speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps versus the Fire Cube’s 100 Mbps, this kind of uber connection isn’t necessary for good streaming. Most of the media that the Fire Cube operates is compressed media codecs on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.
Fire Cube Ethernet vs. WiFi
Fire Cube’s relatively low maximum Mbps makes it a poor replacement for your WiFi Internet connection. For full smart home connectivity, you’ll want both.
As for Internet speeds, most Internet speeds are throttled at rates between 50 and 100 Mbps by your wireless Internet Service Provider (ISP) unless you’re one of the few people who has invested in Gigabit-speed Internet services such as Google Fiber.
Do You Need WiFi to Use the Fire Cube?
You don’t need WiFi to use your Internet connection as long as you have an Ethernet cable connected from the back of the Fire Cube’s USB connector port into the Internet router. This kind of direct Internet connection bypasses your WiFi connection even if your router is capable of running both a wireless and a wired connection.
If you’re trying to run a smart home off your wireless Internet network, you can still hook up your Fire Cube to the same Internet router via an Ethernet. An Ethernet connection and a WiFi connection can be used on an Internet router at the same time.
However, using an Ethernet and a WiFi connection at the same time will not increase your Internet connectivity speeds. This is because the speed of your Internet is throttled not only by the ISP, but also by the Fire Cube’s 2.0 Ethernet connection.
If connecting your Fire Cube via an Ethernet cable doesn’t increase your Internet speeds, then what is the point? The advantage of setting your Fire Cube up on its own Ethernet connection is that it increases available bandwidth and decreases latency on your wireless network. By putting the Fire Cube on a direct connection, you free up the wireless for other tasks.
Fire Cube Ethernet Can Speed Up Your Connections
Even though the base Mbps capability for Fire Cube may seem low, especially compared to next-generation Gigabit connections, the Internet speed for the Fire Cube should be high enough to run any streaming services you want to use with it. If you run into latency issues, consider running the Fire Cube on a dedicated Ethernet to free up your wireless connection.
