As with any tablet, it may cause a learning curve for children to use. The good news is that the Amazon Fire HD 8 comes with parental controls that allow you to keep them out of areas they should not have access to and only permit them to use the apps you authorize.
Using parental controls can fully keep your kids out of anything not kid-friendly, which is excellent for a parent’s peace of mind. There is even an option to purchase a kid’s fire version which comes preset with kids apps and restrictions.
How to access basic parental controls:
- Locate the “Settings” menu.
- Tap “Parental Controls.”
- Tap the switch next to “Parental Controls.”
- Choose a password easy for you to remember.
- Tap “Finish.”
The Fire HD 8 is its own software, Fire OS. Like Google and Apple, Amazon has tried to create its own app store and versions of apps for everyday use. Due to the Fire HD 8 being an Amazon device, you will not be able to access most Google or Apple-specific apps. For example, Google and Apple maps, calendars, photos, music, books, and web browsers will be unavailable for download.
Once you receive and start using the Fire HD 8, it is recommended to open Amazon’s app store and just browse through, searching for Google or Apple replacements and possibly stumbling across new apps that spark your interest.
If you are a habitual Apple or Android user, the Fire HD 8 will most likely not suit your needs for a primary everyday device. However, if you are flexible with the apps and OS system you use or love the Amazon interface, the Fire HD 8 will be a perfect device for you.
Whether opting for the basic or kid-friendly versions, you can expect to receive your Fire HD 8 loaded and ready to go with all the essential apps needed to get you started. But waste no time diving into the app store full of options to search for new and exciting apps to add to your collection.
