Sylvania General Smart Light Strips are more than just light bulbs that respond to voice commands, especially if you’re looking to give your smart home a sense of style that seamlessly combines with convenience. You can install smart light strips just about anywhere, and they have a broad assortment of uses.
With this FAQ, you’ll have everything you need to know about the Sylvania General Light Strip, including where to install them, how they work, setup, and more.
What is a Smart Light Strip?
A smart light strip is a printed circuit board with an adhesive backing that stretches out like a tape measure. Along the pathway of the circuit are embedded LEDs. Each end has a male or female plug for adding extra strips, subtracting length, or connecting to a plug for AC power.
Of course, that’s just the strip part. Generally, smart strips also have antennas for connecting to Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Bluetooth. Smart light bulbs are mostly used for general lighting purposes, while smart light strips are often used for mood lighting, entertainment, or decorative purposes.
Smart strips are very low profile, easy to hide along the underside of cabinets and beds, the backside of TVs, along hallways, or along with trim and crown molding. The genius of smart light strips lies in their versatility and usefulness.
What Are the Different Types of Sylvania Smart Light Strips?
There are three types of Sylvania Smart Light Strips, each differing mainly in how they are set up and paired:
|Zigbee Compatible Hub Required||You will set these up with a ZigBee compatible device such as an Amazon Echo Hub or Google Nest Hub.|
|Bluetooth Full-Color Flex||Zigbee is not required. Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri compatible.|
|Sylvania Smart LED Strip with Apple HomeKit (SMART +)||Sets up with Apple HomeKit and associated app only.|
How Do You Set Up a Sylvania Strip Light?
How you set up a Sylvania General Smart Light Strip depends on your digital assistant of choice. The light strips are designed to pair with an Amazon Echo Hub, Google Nest Hub, or Apple HomeKit. After physically installing your light strip, plug it in to place it in pairing mode—the lights will turn yellow.
To pair with Alexa:
- Open the Alexa app and choose Devices.
- On the next screen, select the + symbol in the upper, right-hand corner, followed by Add Device > Light.
- On the scroll-down menu, if you don’t see Sylvania, select Other at the very bottom.
- Ensure that the lights are still yellow, then select Discover Devices.
- When Alexa locates your Sylvania Smart Light Strip, select it, and they will pair.
To pair with Apple HomeKit:
- Open the Home app and touch the + symbol in the upper, right-hand corner to add a new device.
- Select Add Accessory, and this will open the camera to scan the QR code on the Sylvania packaging. If you can’t locate the code, select I Don’t Have a Code or Cannot Scan. Since the Sylvania light strip is yellow and in pairing mode, the app will locate it this way. Scan the code or select Sylvania General Smart Light Strip to pair.
To pair with Google Home:
- Open the Google Home app and select Add + in the upper, left-hand corner.
- On the next screen, select Set Up Device > Works with Google.
- Locate your Smart Light Strip on the drop-down menu and select it to begin the pairing process.
Note: Depending on the smart light strip, you may or may not be able to pair it with a particular digital assistant. For example, Sylvania’s brand-new SMART +lineup is specifically designed for Apple HomeKit. The Zigbee smart light strip doesn’t function with Apple or integrate with Siri voice assistant.
How Do I Use the Sylvania Smart Home App?
To use the Sylvania Smart Home app, first, add your Sylvania Smart Light Strip to your devices list. You’ll have to create a group—aka living room, den, kitchen, etc. When you open the app, select “Add A Group” at the top and enter a name of your choice. You can also select a name from a drop-down list if preferable. Once you create a group, the app will automatically take you to the group you created to begin adding your smart light strip.
Strictly speaking, the Sylvania Smart Home app isn’t necessary, as you can add the Sylvania Smart Strip to another hub or app, such as Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit. The Sylvania Smart Home app maintains a relatively low customer review rating on both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store. So if you want to use the app, proceed with caution.
Will I Need a Hub for the Sylvania General Smart Light Strip?
Only the Sylvania SMART + LED Zigbee Full Color Flex Strip requires a hub to operate. If you’re putting together a smart home, then you probably already own a hub. Amazon Echo, Apple Home—iPad, HomePod or Apple TV, Google Nest Hub, or any Zigbee compatible, third-party hubs will work.
The Sylvania SMART + LED Full Color Flex Strip and the Sylvania SMART + LED Full Color Flex Strip with Apple HomeKit don’t require hubs, though having one isn’t detrimental at all. Also, the Apple HomeKit version—though it doesn’t require a hub—only works with Apple HomeKit, not Alexa or Google Assistant.
If you own a smart hub that isn’t an Apple product, be sure to double-check the type of Sylvania General Smart Light Strip before you commit.
What Does the Sylvania General Smart Light Strip Do?
Sylvania light strips add mood and ambiance to any setting in any room and also have a pulse/flash option that syncs with your music or movies.
The best part about smart light strips is their versatility: Unlike a smart bulb, you can install a smart light strip anywhere. Highlighting your cabinets, running two parallel strips along a hallway, or adding ambiance and depth to the back of your TV are just a few ways to use smart light strips.
You can also set your Sylvania Smart strip to sync with your music or while you’re watching a movie by using the control box that comes with it, through your digital assistant, or via your hub app.
Can I Modify, Lengthen, Or Shorten the Sylvania General Smart Light Strip?
While some smart strips allow you to cut them at certain sections—indicated by a “scissor” symbol—you can’t shorten the Sylvania General Smart Light Strip in this way. However, you can modify it in other ways by extending, curling, or removing extensions.
Sylvania Smart Strips come in three separate sections, regardless of the overall length you order. All three sections can connect and extend the smart strip. Sylvania limits its smart strips to a total of 20 feet. Anything over 20 feet may create problems.
One end of a single strip connects to a power cord. The rest of the strips have connectors to create additional length or remove them if it’s too much. Sylvania Smart Strips are made out of plastic and are flexible to the same degree that you would find in a measuring tape.
This means that while you can easily bend and flex the strip back and forth over corners, you will have to curl the strip to adhere it to a surface and curve it laterally. Behind the TV is no big deal, as no one will likely see it, but a little more creativity will be required if you want to flex it sideways on a visible surface.
What Is the Power Consumption and Lifespan of Sylvania General Smart Lights?
Sylvania claims that its smart light strips will last up to 13.7 years and require a 120V power supply at 36 watts. Since no specific information exists on power consumption per hour—there are so many variables such as brightness, length, and length of use—the consensus is that a smart strip, powered at 100% brightness all day and night for 365 days, will add around $20 per year to your power bill.
LED smart strips are incredibly efficient when it comes to power consumption. You could even use them as an alternative to regular lighting and save money on your power bill. With a 13.7 year lifespan, they’re built to last without burning a hole in your wallet.
How Do You Reset a Sylvania Smart Light Strip?
To perform a full factory reset on the Sylvania General Smart Light Strip, you’ll have to remove the smart light strip from your hub’s app. After removing it, power cycle the physical smart strip by quickly unplugging it and plugging it in five times. Once the lights return to warm white or yellow, it is in pairing mode and ready to set up again.
To remove the light strip from Apple HomeKit:
- Open the Home app, select the Sylvania Smart Light Strip, and select the gear/settings icon at the bottom, right-hand corner.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the next menu and select Remove Accessory > Remove.
To remove the device from Amazon Alexa:
- Open the Alexa app, then select Devices on the bottom, right-hand corner.
- On the next screen, select the light symbol at the top, then locate and select the Sylvania Smart Light Strip.
- On the next screen, select the settings (gear icon) at the top, right.
- On the Sylvania device settings screen, select the trash icon followed by Delete.
To remove the device from Google Home:
- Open the Home app and select Settings at the bottom.
- Select More Settings under Google Assistant Services.
- On the next screen, tap Assistant > Home Control > Devices > Linked Services.
- Now locate your Sylvania Smart Light Strip and tap it to unlink it from your Google Home app.
What If My Sylvania Smart Light Strip Has Dim or Unlit Sections?
Dim sections in the Sylvania Smart Light Strip are usually indicative of low voltage. This is especially true if there are too many sections surpassing the manufacturer’s suggested length. Unlit sections usually mean there’s an open circuit due to mishandling or a flaw in the manufacturing process.
If you have an unlit section, check along the length of the components to find the break. If you locate a separation and know how to solder, completing the circuit won’t be a problem. If not, you’ll have to return the item, which will be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.
As the voltage travels along the strip, it dissipates towards the end. If you have dim sections on the end, try removing a section or two and see if it resolves the problem. If not, check the voltage to make sure the supplied voltage meets the requirements of the smart light strip.
Three LEDs together is a 12V strip, while six LEDs together is a 24V strip. If the voltage requirements are met, it is a manufacturing issue and should be returned and replaced.
Can I Install the Sylvania General Smart Light Strip Outdoors?
Sylvania Smart Light Strips are not rated for outdoor use. However, they can be installed in screened-in patios or sealed, window porches, so long as the strips are not subject to moisture.
If you have a good porch cover and humidity isn’t a problem, the only issue you may run into is interference or low signal. It’s best to test the lights out before exposing the adhesive and installing them.
Brick, concrete, plastic, rubber, and metal are all poor conduits for Wi-Fi signals. The effective range for smart light strips averages around thirty feet, so that doesn’t allow much room for error without a solid Wi-Fi extender.
What Is the Color Range of Sylvania General Smart Light Strips?
Sylvania Smart Light Strips have 16 million color options and a brightness adjustment between 2700K and 6500K. This includes your standard white light that can be adjusted to warm—yellow appearance.
Regardless of which hub and app you choose to go with—Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, etc.—there is a color panel designed just for brightness and color adjustments. For instance, if you select blue, the smart strip will change to a default blue, and a sliding scale will be available for you to alter the hue.
There is also a selection of solid, default color schemes within each app. A sliding scale for brightness adjustments is also available within each app. The color and brightness options are nearly endless, with a color and brightness theme to match any event or mood.
