Samsung TV Buttons Not Working (5 Things To Try)

Last Updated Jan 8, 2022
three remotes and a tiny hand

There’s almost nothing more frustrating than trying to enjoy your home entertainment system but the buttons on the TV remote won’t work! If you are having trouble because your Samsung TV buttons are not working, don’t worry. We have five simple solutions for you to try to get your movie, television show, game, or whatever it is that you are enjoying controllable from the comfort of your couch in no time!

If your Samsung TV buttons are not working, try these simple tests to find the solution:

  • Test the remote pad.
  • Change the batteries.
  • Perform a digital camera test.
  • Test another remote.
  • Restart the TV.

While some of these solutions may seem quite obvious, others require a few steps. So let’s go through each of them now to find out exactly what your problem is and more importantly, how to fix it!

Test the Remote Pad

The first step on our list is one of the easiest ones to complete as you do not even have to get up off the couch. In order to test the remote pad to make sure it’s functioning properly, you should first ensure that the transmitter has a clear shot at the TV.

Make sure that the remote is clean of any dirt and that there are no obstacles blocking the signal.

Then, you should open the battery compartment by sliding the protective pad off, take out the batteries, and hold down any button for about twenty seconds. Replace the batteries and see if that did the trick! If not, keep reading, we have four more solutions for you to try.

Change the Batteries

Although this may sound like an obvious solution, it often gets forgotten because everything is so high-tech now, we forget that a remote still needs fresh batteries every so often.

To replace the batteries, simply remove the dead or dying batteries and put in brand new ones. Remember to double-check that they are the right kind and of course, that they are placed in the correct location and direction.

Your Samsung TV buttons might be working perfectly now! But if the problem is more than just batteries, we have a fix for that too.

Perform a Digital Camera Test

A digital camera test requires you to have a camera of any kind, a digital version will work, but so will any smartphone camera. In order to perform the test, just follow the instructions below:

  • Turn on the camera.
  • Point the remote transmitter at the camera from 6-10 inches away.
  • Press any button on the remote.
  • You will hopefully see an infrared light on the camera screen.

If you do see this light, it means that the receptor on the television is the problem, not the remote itself and that most likely means that you will have to reach out to a Samsung technician for help.

However, if you do not see a red light, then your remote is the culprit. In that case, you need to order a replacement remote

Test Another Remote

If you are still not sure whether it is the remote or the television which is causing the issue, an easy way to test it is to simply try using another remote on the TV.

It’s important to note that in order to perform this test, you will need another remote that you know already works on your Samsung TV.

If it does work, once again, it is a problem with your remote and it may just be time to buy a new one.

Restart the TV

After trying each of these tactics, you should know what is causing your problem, i.e. if it is the remote which is not working or the TV itself. But when it comes to technology, there is one tried and true solution that should always be employed: the restart.

In this case, we recommend unplugging your Samsung television for a few minutes before plugging it back in and turning it back on. As crazy as it sounds, it just may be the solution you were looking for all along.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to remotes, we are all pretty spoiled. They usually work without a hitch and the button that we press leads to the entertainment of our choice in seconds.

But if the Samsung TV buttons are not working on your remote, luckily, you now know the five tips to try in order to fix the problem and carry on enjoying your home entertainment!

If you are still having trouble, even after you have restarted the television and performed the several tests mentioned above, and even after you have purchased a brand new remote, you will probably need to contact the Samsung support page and maybe even have a technician come take a look.
