Roku Express- How To Turn Off

Last Updated Jul 28, 2022

The Roku Express is a great streaming hub that can be used to watch the latest shows and movies. It has a huge selection of apps you can install to improve your binges. When you are done watching the Roku Express, you will likely look for the power button to turn it off. But, when you cannot find one, you may begin to worry a bit.

The Roku Express is a low-power hub meant to stay powered on at all times. This means it does not come with a power button. This also means that users cannot use the remote to go into the device and ask it to turn off. So, how do you turn off the Roku Express?

How to Turn Off Roku Express

If you do not like to leave electronics on when you are not home or are not using them, you are not alone. Many people who buy a Roku Express find out the hard way that it doesn’t have a power button. This sometimes upsets these users because they do not want to waste electricity.

To turn off the Roku Express, you must unplug its power cord from the outlet. This is the only way to turn off the Roku Express since it is meant to stay on in a low-power state at all times.

If you find your Roku Express is constantly turning off on its own, there may be some other problems.

The Surge Protector Method

If you do not like to just pull the power cord out of the wall for your electronics because you are afraid they will fry, you are not alone. There is a way to work through this safely. Follow these steps to turn off your Roku Express manually with a surge protector:

  1. Plug the surge protector into a power outlet at home.
  2. Unplug the Roku Express from the power outlet and plug it into the surge protector.
  3. When you want to turn the Roku Express off, turn the surge protector off.

While the surge protector method is not the most conventional, it does work. This is the only way to turn the Roku Express off when it is not in use. It is perfectly safe for the Roku Express and will not fry it. If you need to power cycle the Roku Express or troubleshoot it, keep reading for tips to do so without using an on/off switch.

Roku Express Power Troubles

It is easy to plop down on your couch, grab a snack, and pop on the Roku Express to watch your favorite shows and movies. This is a great way to relax that a lot of people enjoy. Sometimes this relaxation is interrupted when the Roku Express experiences power problems. Keep reading to learn some tips and tricks to troubleshoot these power issues.

Low Power Alert

Sometimes a user of the Roku Express will come across a low power alert. This alert initially confuses. After all, the TV is powered on and functioning fine, so why is this alert showing up to begin with?

If you have plugged your Roku Express into a low-power outlet, it may not be getting enough electricity to function properly.

If this is the case, the easiest way to fix it is to swap the Roku Express outlet. A fully powered outlet should give it enough electricity to function properly.

If you do not have another outlet, consider calling an electrician. They can come in and determine whether or not they can swap out the low power outlet for a general outlet with the right voltage.

A Moment Frozen in Time

If you are watching the Roku Express and it suddenly freezes, you may be stuck staring at the same screen for a long time if you do not move into action. When the Roku Express freezes, it needs to be reset to work properly again. This reset should occur in the form of a power cycle. The problem? There is no power button on the Roku Express to perform such a task.

Conveniently, the Roku Express must be plugged into an outlet to power on. If it is unplugged, it will turn off, or in this instance power cycle.

Find the cord and follow it to the back, plugging it into the outlet. Unplug it and wait about fifteen seconds. Plug it back and wait for it to turn on.

Too Hot to Handle

The Roku Express can overheat on rare occasions. As soon as this occurs, the user needs to power down the unit and give it a break for a while.

A unit can overheat if it is left running in a room that becomes extremely hot or if it malfunctions because it has been left running in a really hot room.

There is no power button on the Roku Express to simply turn it off to cool down. Instead, you must unplug the Roku Express unit from the wall outlet.

After doing so, take the Roku Express and place it in the open so it can breathe. Once the unit cools down, plug it back in and see if it solved the issue.

Enjoy the Show

Now that you know you can turn off the Roku Express, it is time to sit back and enjoy the show. The Roku Express is a great device for watching various shows and apps. These shows and apps are some of the best available. So sit back, relax and enjoy.
