Nest Thermostat VS Honeywell WiFi: Which Is Better?

Last Updated Nov 19, 2021

Technology has come a long way, and home thermostats can attest to this. As the world is moving toward an ecofriendly future, big companies like Google and Honeywell are stepping up their pursuit in providing environmental-friendly products such as Nest and Honeywell WiFi thermostats. However, a lot of people are torn between the two since they’re both great at their work.

Both Nest and Honeywell WiFi thermostats are equipped with the modern technology of regulating the heat in your home, monitoring any changes, and alerting you. There is also the ability to use Smart Assistance to activate and deactivate your thermostat. However, they both have areas where they need improvement.

That’s not all, as you still need to know the key differences and similarities, which you will learn if you read on.

A Comparison Between Nest and Honeywell WiFi Thermostats

Have you been considering parting away with your current thermostat and embracing the new technology? Maybe you’re stuck between Nest and Honeywell WiFi, and you wouldn’t be the first person to face this dilemma. Going by the amount of information online regarding the two, you won’t be blamed if you’re a bit hesitant in your choice. However, this guide will do something a bit different. Instead of looking at what sets these two apart, we will also look at what makes them similar and great at their work.

The Key Differences between Nest and Honeywell WiFi

Although the two are meant to do similar tasks, they differ in physical appearance and performance. They include:

Although the differences are not that distinctive, the two thermostat controls share some similarities, which is the area where many people tend to get confused when making a buying choice.

Here are the features that the two share:

Remote Control

Nest and Honeywell WiFi have done an incredible job of improving their technology to allow remote control, which comes in the form of a smartphone app. Not only do the apps send notifications regarding the thermostat condition, but they also allow you to control the system remotely. The devices can connect to your home WiFi, enabling them to receive commands from your smartphone.

Power Supply

Sadly, Nest and Honeywell WiFi require a constant power supply to work, thus limiting where you can install them in your home. Also, their performance gets interrupted in case of a blackout or when someone accidentally switches off power. But if you don’t have electricity, your HVAC system probably won’t be working anyway.

Smart Assistance

You don’t have to physically interact with the devices to get them started, as they’re equipped with Smart Assistance. Nest uses Google Assistance, while Honeywell WiFi uses Alexa. The two Smart Assistance technologies recognize and respond to your voice command, allowing you to interact with the devices from across the room.

Tracking Capability

Besides acting as a remote control, the smartphone apps also track your movement away from home, thus deactivating the thermostat once you leave a designated radius. This capability makes it possible to save energy, as heating an empty house wastes energy throughout the day. Upon returning home, and once you’ve entered the said radius, the app will detect your movement and activate the thermostat, allowing you to come home to a warm house.

Engaging Other Smart Home Devices

Honeywell WiFi utilizes the Resideo App, which can also engage and control other smart home devices. However, you still need to make proper customized settings, as this capability will vary with your device type.

The Verdict

It’s hard to distinguish between the two, given how similar they are in terms of performance. Also, the price shouldn’t be a defining factor since a few dollars difference between the two. Nonetheless, Nest has a futuristic circular appearance, while Honeywell WiFi has maintained the classic rectangular shape that complements any surrounding.

Given Google’s reputation and the global availability of Nest thermostats, it would make perfect sense if you opted for this device. But that doesn’t mean Honeywell WiFi is a lesser thermostat, as it is also capable of impressive performance. The two devices are years ahead of their competitors, and one can only expect them to get better with improved technology and functionality.

Thermostats have evolved from what they used to be, and it’s all thanks to growing technology. Nest and Honeywell WiFi are market leaders, which is rightfully so, given the time they’ve taken to innovate their devices. However, the two devices differ in price, market availability, and physical appearance. Even so, they’re similar to some extent, thanks to remote control, smart assistance, tracking capability, and accessing WiFi. They’re both very effective in monitoring and controlling your thermostat system even when you’re not around.
