So, your trusty Kindle Fire HD 8 won’t power up and you’ve tried everything?  Let’s make sure that you have indeed tried everything. Here is a list of troubleshooting and common fixes that can help you systematically try and find out if you can fix the problem yourself, if you need to get Amazon involved in the repair, or if you need to start looking for a replacement.

If your Kindle Fire HD 8 won’t power up, it could be a bad cable or a dirty charging port.  You may also need to hold the power button down to get it to power back on.  If that doesn’t work, you can try performing a soft or hard reset on the device to bring it back to factory settings.

In this article, you’ll learn how to troubleshoot making sure your device is charged properly, and fully.  You will also learn to clean the charging port and to make sure you are powering on the device correctly. Keep reading to find out how to fix your device yourself and get back to reading!

Fixes to Try

It may seem redundant, but you’d be amazed at how many times a modern smart device just getting the charge it needs can make a huge difference in resolving problems.

Many people use their laptop or desktop computers to charge their devices, but the small trickle of power from a USB port on your home computer might not be putting out enough power.  You should make sure to plug your charging cable into a wall charger for at least an hour to make sure the device is getting enough of a charge to power on.

Clean the Charging Port

Modern life can get very hectic.  People spend more time on their device and tend to keep the charger plugged in while using the device.  This constant use and movement can cause the wires inside the charging cable to become bent or broken, causing intermittent charging.

Sometimes, just changing out your charging cable can breathe new life into a device. If you want to be extra safe, you can leave the device to charge for six hours to make sure it has a full charge.

After an hour of charging, if the device still won’t power on, you should try another charging cable to make sure the previous one you were using hasn’t malfunctioned.

  • Make sure to check your charging port on your device to see if there is any built-up dust or debris that might be keeping the device from charging properly.
  • Be sure if you do find dust and debris to use a non-metallic implement, such as a toothpick, to clean the dust out.

Hold The Power Button Down A Little Longer

Some smart devices will power up at just the touch of a button while others require you to keep the button pushed in for a longer period of time.  It is very common for people to just tap a button and when the device doesn’t power on, for them to assume the device is broken or malfunctioning.

Hold down the power button on your Kindle Fire HD 8 for a few seconds (at least five) and see if the tablet powers on.

Perform A Soft Reset

If charging and holding the power button down didn’t work for you, you can try resetting your Kindle Fire HD 8.  There are two kinds of resets, the first we will talk about is a soft reset.  A soft reset is sort of like rebooting your computer.  All of your data is still there and available.  A hard reset deletes everything and returns the tablet to the way it was received from the factory on original purchase.

To perform a soft reset on the Kindle Fire HD 8:

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time
  • Hold Power and Volume Down buttons down for about 30 seconds
  • Release the buttons
  • Ignore any prompts (this is part of performing a hard reset)
  • If the device powers on, power off device and restart like normal
  • Hold power button down for five seconds and see if it powers on

Tip: If the power and volume down button combination is proving ineffective, try using the Power and Volume UP buttons. Due to the different generations of devices, some might use a different combination of buttons.

Perform A Hard Reset

Performing a hard reset on a Kindle Fire HD 8 is very similar to performing a soft reset.  The only difference is when the device powers on there will be a prompt to reset the device to factory settings.

WARNING: Performing a hard reset on your device will delete on of the data stored on it and reset it back to way it was delivered from the factory.

To perform a hard reset on the Kindle Fire HD 8:

  • Press and Hold Power and Volume Down buttons down for about 30 seconds
  • Release the buttons when you see the Amazon logo
  • After the Amazon logo disappears, you will see the System Recovery Screen
  • Use the Volume buttons to navigate the menu to select the wipe data and factory option and use the Power button to confirm and select this option.
  • Use the volume button to navigate to Yes, delete all user data and the Power button to confirm this selection.
  • It might take a few minutes to hard reset your Kindle Fire HD 8 tablet

Tip: If the power and volume down button combination is proving ineffective, try using the Power and Volume UP buttons. Due to the different generations of devices, some might use a different combination of buttons.

Final Thoughts

You can clean out your port and make sure your device has a full charge, but sometimes, it just doesn’t work. If none of these fixes worked for you, you might have a truly broken device or even a damaged battery.  These are things only Amazon can repair.
