There might come a time when you decide that your Xfinity subscription is no longer the best fit for you. Before you go ahead with canceling access to their services, you may be wondering if there is a fee you’ll need to pay and, if so, how much.

Xfinity charges an Early Termination Fee (ETF) to subscription holders who cancel their subscription before the end of its agreement period. The fee is $10 per remaining month in the subscriber’s contract. So, if you have two months remaining on your 12-month contract, you’d pay an ETF of $20.

In this article, we will answer other relevant questions regarding Xfinity subscription cancellations, such as whether there is a way to avoid the company’s ETFs, how to determine how many months are left in your subscription, and how to successfully cancel your Xfinity subscription.

Is There a Way to Avoid an Xfinity ETF?

Paying $10 per remaining month in your Xfinity subscription contract might not sound like much at first, but if you have a two-year contract that has an entire year left, that $10 quickly adds up.

Regardless of how much time is left on your Xfinity subscription, most people would like to avoid paying fees when possible, but is there a way to avoid Xfinity’s ETFs?

The only ways to avoid paying an Xfinity ETF is to either cancel your subscription at the end of your contract, have access to their services without being under contract (ex., paying for a subscription), or utilize their 30-day money-back guarantee policy.

The 30-day money-back guarantee policy is the best option for anyone who is considering trying out an Xfinity subscription but isn’t entirely sold on whether they want to keep it.

What you can do is sign up for a 30-day trial, and then, if you decide within that 30-day period that you want to cancel, you can reach out to customer service. They’ll help you ensure you receive a “refund for the monthly recurring fee paid for the first 30 days of service, excluding installation charges, fees, taxes, or per-call charges.”

If you’ve had an Xfinity subscription for well beyond the 30-day trial period, then your only option for avoiding a fee would be to cancel when your subscription period has ended or to speak with an Xfinity representative and test your powers of persuasion.

How To Determine the Number of Months Left in an Xfinity Subscription

The fewer months you have left in your Xfinity contract, the less you’ll have to pay in ETFs. While that might seem simple enough, since some Xfinity contracts last 1-2 years, it’s understandable that most of us don’t remember the exact month our subscription started. Luckily, there is an easy way to find this information.

Any Xfinity subscription holder can find the terms of their contract by signing on to their Xfinity account online and following the steps below:

  1. Click on “My Account”
  2. Select the “Settings” tab
  3. Open the “Legal Agreements and Contract” option

Once you’ve opened this page, you should see a list of your Xfinity subscriptions and the date you agreed to its terms.

If you’ve forgotten the contract’s term length, you can open its document and find that information within, along with the contract’s terms and other relevant information.

How to Cancel an Xfinity Subscription

If you’ve decided that you no longer want your Xfinity subscription, you have a few options for canceling it. Both of which are easy and can be completed within minutes.

Your first option for canceling an Xfinity subscription is to visit an Xfinity store and speak with a representative about ending your contract. Your second option would be to log on to your Xfinity account and then fill out its online cancellation form.

Alternatively, you can mail in a printed cancellation form, call an Xfinity representative, or chat with one online.

Depending on your preferred method, your cancellation will either be immediate or it will go through a 48-hour processing period while Xfinity gathers your information and finalizes the cancellation request.

It’s important to note that if you have any equipment from Xfinity, such as a cable box or modem, you will need to return this equipment within 30 days of canceling your service.

If you don’t, Xfinity will charge you for the cost of the unreturned equipment. Additionally, if you have any outstanding balances with Xfinity, you will need to pay these off before your cancellation, along with any ETFs charged to your account upon cancellation.

Final Thoughts

While it might seem unfair for Xfinity to charge a cancellation fee, it’s actually a common practice that helps ensure these companies have some financial security when they lose customers prematurely.

Thankfully, the fee per month is reasonable, and there are numerous plan options to help ensure you don’t lock yourself into a plan period you don’t intend to enjoy to the fullest. We recommend looking over these plans thoroughly and maybe choosing the shortest one possible since there is no fee to renew a subscription.
