Last Updated Feb 3, 2022

Finding the MAC address of your devices can be tricky sometimes. If you’re using macOS, however, it can be found with just a few clicks. So, how do you find your MAC address in macOS?

Your MAC address can be found by going to your system preferences, clicking on the network, and accessing the advanced settings of your WiFi. It should be right under the “hardware” tab.

If you need to know where to find your MAC address in macOS, we’ve got you covered. In our guide below we will first define what a MAC address is and explain what it does. Then our step-by-step guide will show you where you can find yours. Further, we will also discuss where to find it in iOS as well, so all your bases are covered.

What is a MAC Address?

Before we jump into how to find yours, it would be a good idea to get a grasp on what a MAC address is in the first place and what it’s used for.

A MAC (media access control) address is what identifies your specific device on a network and globally. The address itself is housed in your network card and used through WiFi or ethernet. This allows packets to be processed by verifying the right address.

Information can be routed across a network, to the appropriate device, simply by using the MAC addresses of the devices connected to the network.

Additionally, wireless access points can use the MAC address to only allow connection with known devices.

Step by Step: How to Find the MAC Address in macOS

Now onto the main event: how to find the MAC address in macOS, such as on an Apple MacBook Air. Fortunately, this process is quite simple and can be done with just a handful of clicks.

Below we’ve broken down the process of acquiring your MAC address into four easy steps:

  • Go into system preferences: This can be found by clicking on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen. It should be the second option on the drop-down menu.
  • Click on the network icon: When you’ve opened system preferences, a window should open up with various icons on it. In the third row down, you should see a blue and white icon labeled “network.” Click on it.
  • Go into the advanced settings: In the lower right corner of the window that opens up, you should see a button that says advance. Just click it.
  • Go to the WiFi tab and view your MAC address: The WiFi tab should be the first one in the upper left side of the screen. The MAC address will be at the bottom of the window. It will be labeled as the WiFi address.

Once you find it, feel free to write it down so you don’t have to go through this process again in the future. Still, even if you do, it only takes a few moments.

Where to Find the MAC Address in iOS Devices

If you have a Mac, chances are you may also have an iOS device as well, such as an iPad. There is a different process for finding the MAC address on these mobile devices and tablets than there is on Apple’s computer operating system. Finding the MAC address on an Apple TV is also different.

Below we’ve outlined each step in how to find the MAC address on your iOS device:

  • Go to general settings: You can get here by clicking the settings icon and scrolling down to “general”. The general icon should be the one with gears on it. Once you’ve found it, simply tap to enter.
  • Tap “about”: This should be the first option that pops up after you tap on “general”.
  • Scroll down to “WiFi address”: Remember, the WiFi address is the same thing as the MAC address. From here you should be able to read out what it is.

As you can see, the process of finding your MAC address on your iOS device is quite easy and straightforward. If you think you might forget how to do it in the future, feel free to bookmark this page and come back anytime you need.
