How to Connect Your Lutron Caseta to Your Google Home
Before getting started, you’ll need to have installed your Lutron Caseta into your home’s wiring grid. If you have not already done so, click here to learn about the installation process.
After that, take the following steps:
Download the Lutron App
- If you have an iPhone, it’ll need to be on iOS 11 or later to support the app.
- If you’re using a MacBook, it’ll also need to be on iOS 11 or later. It’ll also need an Apple M1 chip.
- If you’re using an Android phone, you’ll need version 5.0 and up to support the app.
Ensure that Your Google Home Is Connected
To ensure a fast setup process, make sure that your Google Home is connected to your Wi-Fi network. Give it a simple command and see if it works. If you’re already connected, proceed to the next step.
Enable Your Caseta in the Google Home App
You likely already have the Google Home app on your phone if your smart home assistant is up and running. You’ll need to enable “Caseta Wireless” in the app so the two devices can “talk” to each other. To do this:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Navigate to “Home Control.”
- Select Caseta Wireless.
- Follow prompts on the screen and enter your user credentials.
Make sure that your phone, Lutron Caseta, and Google Home Assistant are on the same Wi-Fi network. At this point, you should be able to connect your Lutron Caseta with your Google Home.
Troubleshooting Lutron Caseta and Google Home Connection
If you have any problems linking your two devices, you have options when troubleshooting the issue. Consider how the following measures could help you:
Relaunch the App
For whatever reason, the Google Home App might not pick up on your Lutron Caseta’s signal. So first, try relaunching the app. This doesn’t mean quitting out and then going back in; actually close the app and then open it as though you’re using it for the first time.
Reset Your Google Home
Connection issues making you upset? Try a hard reset. To reset your Google Home, simply locate the microphone button and hold down on it for 15 seconds. Keep in mind that by doing this, you may have to re-sync other devices.
Make Sure Your Lutron Caseta Is Connected to the Internet
Try giving your Lutron Caseta a command from your smartphone. If it doesn’t work, chances are it’s not connected to the internet. You go into the Lutron App to determine whether your device is online. If you recently suffered a power outage or cut power to the fuse, you might need to put your device back onto your network.
Make Sure Your Software Is Up to Date
Periodically, you’ll need to update both the Google Home App and the Lutron app. These updates are free and generally work out any “bugs” that could prevent your devices from working. If you have an iPhone, you can check for updates by going into the Apple App Store on your device. Here, you’ll be able to see if any of your apps need updating.
If you have an Android, you’ll need to:
- Click on the Google Play app.
- Click on your profile icon.
- Tap “Manage apps & device.”
- Select “Update.”
Depending on how much storage your phone has, you might need to delete an app to make space.
See if Your Lutron Caseta Bridge Is Working
Just because you installed your Lutron Caseta into your home’s wiring grid doesn’t mean that it will work. You will need to set up its “bridge,” which basically allows it to connect to the internet and relay messages to other devices.
To check if your bridge is working, go into the Lutron App and check its connectivity status. Click here to learn more about doing this.
File a Warranty Claim
If your Google Home, Lutron Caseta, or Lutron Bridge aren’t working despite your best efforts, it could be a problem with its internal components. In this instance, you could contact the makers of your Google Home or Lutron Caseta and see if you can file a warranty claim.
You generally have one year from the date of purchase to do this, and companies only cover factory-related defects––not damage that comes from customers’ negligence or misuse.
Connecting your Lutron Caseta to your Google Home is easy. By making changes within the Lutron App, you can sync your two devices and wirelessly control your home’s lights.
