Smart assistants are becoming more and more ubiquitous. They are everywhere and have added a lot of value to our daily lives.

But you are unique and want that same uniqueness for your favorite voice assistant, Alexa. Well good news, you can change Alexa’s name and even the way she talks.

Now it isn’t as custom as you might be hoping. You won’t be able to change the name to just anything. Amazon has four names to choose from:

  • “Alexa”
  • “Amazon”
  • “Echo”
  • “Computer”

You can even change the accent the Alexa speaks in. In the app, you will be able to choose a regional accent that Alexa will now speak in. It’s pretty cool if you are fresh off a trip abroad or ever plan on moving overseas.

The accent is tricky as it may take away some of the functionality of Alexa. Amazon takes into account the regional accent chosen for Alexa and provides the proper skills, music and content. If the region you selected does not support certain features, you will be out of luck.

How To Change Alexa’s Name

Changing Alexa’s name is extremely easy. It takes about 30 seconds. The only thing that most might not be aware of is the fact that you only have four options. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to name your Alexa Scooby-Doo or Cher. How cool would it be to tell Cher to turn the kitchen lights off or shut the garage door?

You still have hoices and although they are not crazy unique, they are different. You can choose between Alex, Amazon, Echo and Computer.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. You will need to open the Amazon Alexa app. If you have been using the app for a while you will recognize the basic layout of the home screen.
  2. From the apps home screen, find and select the hamburger menu. It should be three lines and on the upper left-hand side of your screen.
  3. On the bottom of the menu list, select settings. Once the hamburger menu is expanded, you will see the settings option at the bottom of the list.
  4. Find and select the Device Settings option. This menu is pretty long. The device settings option is near the top of the list.
  5. Select the device you want to change the name of. You will get a list of all the devices you have on the app. You will want to select the Alexa device you want to change the name of.
  6. In the General section, select the Wake Word option. This list is pretty long. Scroll down until you get to the General section where you will find the Wake Word.
  7. Choose the wake word you want to use with the selected Echo device. That’s it, you can now change Alexa’s name. You have the four options to choose from.

It might take a few minutes for the name to update. Alexa will tell you when the name has been updated. When I did mine, it only took a few seconds.

The devices ring will turn orange while it is updating and be ready for use after. And that is how you change Alexa’s name!

How To Change Alexa’s Voice and Accent

So you’ve renamed the Echo device but now you want to change the devices dialect. It is just as easy and can be done in no time.

Warning: Amazon bases some features and experiences around the language you have selected. Although it may seem like a great idea, you may lose some of the functionality of the Echo device.

Changing Alexa’s voice or language is pretty similar to changing her name. The steps will almost mirror that process. Let’s get into how to change Alexa’s voice and accent:

  6. In the General section, select the language option. On my app, the language section was right below the Wake Word section.
  7. Select the language you would like Alexa to adopt. Remember, the features available might change slightly depending on which dialect you choose. It may sound cool, but you may face some issues here.

If you choose a language that you do not talk in, you might find some problems with Alexa understanding you. Not only will she talk in that accent but she will also be listening in the accent as well.

“Computer” turn on the living room lights.

Hopefully, in the future, we will be able to name our voice assistants whatever we like. For now, having a few more options isn’t too bad.

Changing the accent of Alexa is also a really neat feature, just remember that Amazon will now think you are from the region of the dialect you choose. You will now have the same Alexa capabilities that that country has, and that could mean less than you are used to.
