How to Adjust Motion Zones on Ring Spotlight Cam

Last Updated Aug 18, 2021
Left side of a Ring spotlight camera.

The Ring Spotlight Cam is a great way to monitor your home when you’re away. You can also integrate it with other Ring devices and even some third-party devices to make your home even more secure. One great feature of the Ring Spotlight Cam is that you can customize motion zones, so you only see the areas you want to be covered.

You’re probably wondering how to set up the motion zones and what exactly they do. Don’t worry; we will go over all these things below. We will also go over some helpful tips so you can make the most out of your motion zones.

How to Set Up Motion Zones on Ring Spotlight Cam

Setting up the motion zones is very easy and only takes a few steps. You can set it up in the Ring app on your phone or smart device:

  1. Tap the three lines on the top left of the app’s homepage.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Select the Spotlight Cam Battery from the drop-down menu.
  4. Tap Motion Settings.
  5. Select Edit Motion Zones.
  6. Select Default Zone.
  7. Tap Done.
  8. Add the motion zones you want by dragging the edges of the blue box to the area you want to see.
  9. Tap Save once finished.

Each Ring Spotlight Cam can only have three different zones, so if you need to see more areas or target other places, you will have to buy another cam and set it up.

How to Adjust Motion Zones on Ring Spotlight Cam

If you want to change the motion zones later on or make them larger or smaller, you can do so in the app:

  1. Go back into Motion Settings.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Readjust the boxes by dragging the corners and edges to the setting you want.

You can adjust the motion zones anytime you want until you get the ideal one.

Adjusting Motion Frequency Options

Even when you have motion zones set up, you don’t have to have them alert you every single time there is a motion. Changing the motion protocols can help preserve battery life and data and keep you from charging the camera as often.

It works by detecting patterns in movements and can turn itself off when there is a repetitive pattern. This will stop your Ring app from constantly being alerted about someone being in the space. It will still issue motion alerts but with longer times between each alert.

There are three different motion alert settings you can choose from:

  • Periodically: Long breaks between motion detections. It allows for maximum battery life.
  • Regularly: Motion detection will take short breaks between the motion alerts; medium battery life but not as long as periodic alerts.
  • Frequently: Motion detection always stays active and will send an alert for every motion. This will result in a very short battery life.

Tips For Adjusting Motion Zones on Ring Spotlight Cam

It’s easy to set up the motion zones in the Ring app, but following these tips and advice can ensure you get the most out of your motion zones.

Avoid Setting Motion Zones in High Traffic Areas

Ideally, you don’t want your motion zone to be in high-traffic areas because you will get too many alerts on your phone. Try not to set up the motion zone where it will go off every time a car drives by or in a place where your dog is usually in the yard.

Use Motion Scheduling

Motion scheduling can help you turn off alerts during a certain period. So, if you know the mail person comes every day at a certain time, you can turn off motion alerts in that time range since you don’t need to know that that person is there.

Make sure to disable the motion schedule before turning back on motion notifications if you need to turn them back on before that period is up.

Final Thoughts

The Ring Spotlight Cam’s motion zones will alert you when there is movement inside that specific area while ignoring movement outside the area. Motion zones can make your home have more effective monitoring for a few reasons:

  • Only see the areas you want.
  • Reduce the number of alerts being sent to your phone.
  • Reduce “false positive” alerts, such as when a car drives by.
  • Set up motion zones to see heavily trafficked zones of your house.

Setting up the motion zones is not always necessary for the Ring Spotlight Cam, but it can definitely make your home’s security more effective.
