The Ring Spotlight Cam is a great addition to any smart home because you can see what’s going around your house and property whether you are home or not. And, if you have Ring devices such as the Spotlight Cam, you probably already know that they are owned by Amazon, and they can connect to Alexa. But how do you connect them?

You can connect the Ring Spotlight Cam to Alexa via the Alexa app by enabling Ring devices. From there, you can sign into the Ring app and start using commands.

Below, we’ll cover how to connect the Ring Spotlight Cam to Alexa and what to do if you experience issues during the process.

How to Connect Amazon Alexa to Ring Spotlight Cam

The connection process can be done in a few simple steps. The easiest way to connect them is by adding the Ring as a skill in your Alexa app.

Connecting Ring Spotlight Cam to Ring App

Before adding the skill to the Amazon Alexa app, you will need to connect the Ring Spotlight Cam to the Ring app. Follow these steps:

  1. Download the Ring app. (It’s available for Android and iOS devices.)
  2. Open the app and select Create Account.
  3. Follow in-app instructions to create a new account.
  4. Tap Set up a Device.
  5. Tap Ring Spotlight Cam.
  6. Use the camera on your smartphone to scan the QR code or Mac ID barcode on the Spotlight Cam. A green square or green line should appear.
  7. Allow the app to use your location so you can better use the Ring Camera. (Certain features will not work if you don’t allow it to use your location.)
  8. Name your Spotlight Cam. It’s best to name it where you plan to mount it.
  9. Plug the Spotlight Cam into the outlet.
  10. Put the camera in setup mode.
  11. The Ring app will ask if you want to join the Ring Wi-Fi Network. Press Join.
  12. Select your home Wi-Fi network.
  13. Enter in your Wi-Fi password.
  14. Tap Continue.

Now test your device and make sure you can see the live camera view in your app.

Connecting Ring Spotlight Cam to Alexa

Before getting started, download the Amazon Alexa app onto your smartphone or tablet. Then try the following steps:

  1. Open Alexa.
  2. Tap the three horizontal bars in the upper left-hand corner.
  3. Tap Skills & Games.
  4. Search for Ring in the search box.
  5. Select Enable.
  6. Sign in to your Ring account with your username and password. (Create a new Ring account if you didn’t already make one.)
  7. Tap Discover Devices.
  8. All the Ring devices you have connected to the Ring app should appear.
  9. Make sure the Ring Spotlight Cam is toggled to the On position.

If you don’t see the Discover Devices option or don’t see your Ring Spotlight Cam listed, try saying, “Alexa, discover my devices.” It should then come up onto the screen, and you can tap Devices.

How to Use Alexa with the Ring Spotlight Cam

Once you have followed the steps above, you can use Alexa with the Ring Spotlight Cam or any other Ring devices you have. You can use simple commands to control Alexa and ask it to show you the camera.

Try some of the following commands:

  • “Alexa, show my backyard.”
  • “Alexa, show Ring Spotlight Cam.”
  • “Alexa, hide Ring Spotlight Cam.”

Remember that to use specific commands such as “backyard” or “garage,” you need to name the camera accordingly in the Ring app. Follow these instructions to remove or rename your Ring Spotlight Cameras.

When you first set up the device, the Ring app will ask you to name the camera, but you can always do it later in the app if you didn’t do it during the initial setup.

Troubleshooting Alexa and Ring Spotlight Cam Setup

Hopefully, there are no issues when setting up the Ring app or the Ring Camera to Alexa. However, sometimes there might be some issues. Check the following things and follow these quick tips:

  • Make sure your Ring Spotlight Cam is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Alexa device.
  • Make sure both devices are on and working.
  • Make sure the Wi-Fi router is on and not flashing red.
  • Try moving the Wi-Fi router closer to the camera and the Alexa device or getting a Wi-Fi extender.
