How Does Chromecast Google TV Work?

Last Updated May 18, 2022

You might hear people talking about Chromecast Google and all the different features it has. It’s a great addition to any smart home because it allows you to stream all your favorite shows and movies much easier. But how does it work?

Google Chromecast with Google TV is a small device that plugs into your TV. It allows you to access all the streaming services you have an account with. It also has Google TV apps and a remote which make using it easier than ever before.

If you have never used Chromecast with Google TV, you might be confused about how it actually works. You might also be wondering how other devices compare and if the new Google Chromecast with Google TV has better features. We will cover all those questions in this article.

How Do I Use Google Chromecast with Google TV?

The Google Chromecast can be plugged directly into the TV’s HDMI port. It comes with the USB cable you need to use with the TV.

Follow these steps to use Google Chromecast with Google TV:

  1. Some smart TVs also have Chromecast built into them. In this case, launch the app from the TV and stream that way.
  2. With Google TV though, you will have the Chromecast device and plug it into the TV.
  3. The small device plugged into your TV allows it to tell the TV what to play and when to play it.
  4. It requires an internet connection to stream shows and movies just like any other streaming device.
  5. Once the device is plugged in and you have it set up, you can log in or make accounts on the streaming platforms you want to use.

Now, let’s take a look at how Google TV Chromecast is different from Chromecast.

How is Chromecast with Google TV Different From Regular Chromecast?

On the Chromecast with Google TV, you can still use your computer or smartphone as a remote to access all your streaming services on the Chromecast. With Google TV though you get a dedicated remote.

If you use a Chromecast without Google TV, you probably know that you have to use your phone as a remote. The app sometimes gets glitchy and keeping up with your phone can get annoying. The addition of the remote is one of the ways the Chromecast with Google TV stands out.

Google TV also gives you different features that the regular Google Chromecast does not have including:

  • 4k video quality
  • HDR10
  • HDR10+
  • Dolby vision
  • Better storage
  • Regular software updates
  • Over 65000 supported Android apps

You also have access to Google Assistant so you can give the TV commands to play certain shows or turn on your favorite music.

There are still many things that are the same though. You will still need to plug the Chromecast into an HDMI port. You will also still need to use WIFI to connect to the Chromecast and use the streaming services.

Streaming Platforms Available with Google Chromecast on Google TV

Since we mentioned over 65,000 Android apps on Google TV, you might be wondering which ones you have access to. Here are the most popular ones.

With Google Chromecast you have access to the following streaming platforms:

  • Netflix
  • Hulu
  • YouTube TV
  • Prime Video
  • Disney+

Now, let’s see what music you can listen to with Google TV.

Music Apps Available on Google Chromecast with Google TV

Besides streaming shows and movies, you can also stream music.

You can also play music on the following platforms:

  • Spotify
  • Tidal
  • Pandora
  • YouTube Music
  • IHeartRadio

Now, let’s look at what else you can do on Google TV.

Games Available on Google Chromecast with Google TV

You may know that in order to game on a TV, you’ll need a console. Not with Google TV.

If you’re a gamer, here are some of your options:

  • Deer Hunter
  • Alien Invaders
  • Risk
  • Tricky Titans
  • Fitlap

None of these lists are exhaustive. There are hundreds of different apps you can get that will display right onto your TV.

Is Chromecast with Google TV Better Than Other Streaming Devices?

There are many other streaming devices that are more popular than Chromecast that you may have heard of. But are they better?

Chromecast has a good design and has most of the apps that people want. It’s also more affordable than some of the other streaming devices offered by Apple and Amazon.

Better Alternatives to Chromecast with Google TV

There are better alternatives though if you’re willing to spend more money. Apple TV 4K allows you to stream all the same content as Google Chromecast but it also allows you to stream directly from your IOS device onto the TV.

You can also stream through a PS4 or Xbox One. Apple TV 4K has also been highly rated by gamers.

Cheaper Options to Chromecast with Google TV

There are also cheaper options if the Google Chromecast is not within your budget. Roku Express 4K Plus is one of the cheapest streaming devices available. It has many of the same streaming platforms.

The design is a bit flawed though and some users say that it lags behind and does not access content as fast as the Google Chromecast.

Final Thoughts

Chromecast with Google TV is a great streaming device with access to thousands of apps. You also have a dedicated remote which is easier to use than your phone or tablet. It’s affordable and convenient compared to other streaming devices as well.
