How Do Guests Use August Smart Lock?
The August Smart Lock is an innovative smart lock that attaches to your deadbolt and controls it through an app or by your phone’s location. It does not replace the entire deadbolt but attaches directly to the inside portion of your existing deadbolt.
This design will still allow you to use your physical key if needed but still gives you all the cool automated features that come with smart home technology. This lock is packed with features, one of which is the ability to give your guests access to your home.
So how do guests use and gain access to your smart lock? It’s pretty simple, you, the owner, send them an invite from the August app that can be for a certain amount of time, a recurring time or ongoing.
The August Smart Lock allows unlimited guest keys to be issued and each key can have as much or as little access as you feel necessary. As the owner, you will be able to monitor, adjust and remove guest access at any time.

The app interface is really easy to navigate and adding guest access is a breeze. Let’s jump into how to add a guest now.
To invite a guest to have access to your lock, you will need to ensure they have a compatible phone. I am sure for the bulk of you reading this, that won’t be an issue.
Getting them their virtual key is pretty simple. They will have their virtual keys in no time and you will be able to monitor their comings and goings right from your phone.
- In the app, select the guest tab
- Select the invite button towards the top of the screen
- Select from your contact list or type in the number of your guest
- Send the invite
They really do make adding guest as simple and streamlined as possible. When adding guests, you will need to also set up their access type. LEts get into that next.
The fact that you can grant access types to this smart lock is pretty awesome. Every guest does not need full access all of the time. Sometimes they are in town for a few days or some guests may only need access during a certain time frame. The August Smart Lock covers all the bases in that regard.
Always. This is best for those guests who usually stick around until they are 18 or so. Your kids or anyone else with this access type will have full access to the lock at any time of the day. With this access level, the owner can still change or remove them at any time.
Recurring. This access type allows the owner to set a certain recurring time frame for the guest to have access. It can be daily or weekly. This is best for a dog walker or maybe your house cleaning crew.
For example, your dog walker can have access between 2 PM and 4 PM, the designated dog walking time or your house cleaners can have access every Thursday. Once the time has passed they will no longer have access to your home.
Temporary.– We have all had house guests who might have benefited from having a key of their own. The temporary access type allows you to set a time and date for access to stop. If they are in town for a week, having a key for that week would probably make everyone’s life a bit easier.
Notifications. This is a toggle switch that is available for each guest access type. If you want to receive a notification when the dog walker comes and goes, you will be able to set that in the app.
There are two types of access levels with the August Smart Lock: guests and owners. We outlined the guests above but there are also owners. Owners are the ones with the ability to send out guest keys as well as receive activity notifications that some guests may not have the ability to see.
Owners set the amount of access each guest will have, and what smart features they will have access to.
Owners will also have the ability to remove guests or other owners access and keep up with the guest list. The guest list is the people who have guest access to the lock.
Other Features of the August Smart Lock
Activity Monitoring. You will have access to the last 30 days of activity within the app. Activities include when the door was locked and unlocked and will even let you know if it was unlocked manually (with a physical key) or not. You will also be able to see who opened the door if you have multiple users.
If you have DoorSense, you will also get a notification when the door is left ajar. More on DoorSense below.
Auto Unlock. This might be my favorite feature of the August smart lock. The lock will use your phone’s location to automatically unlock the door when you are getting home. This feature allows you to walk right in without having to fumble for your keys.
Auto Lock. This feature is also very handy as it allows you to set a timer on how long the door stays unlocked. The timer will start when the door has been unlocked and will lock itself automatically. That time can be 30 seconds or 30 minutes, that is up to you.
DoorSense. This is an extra sensor that comes with the lock and allows you to see when the door is open, closed or left ajar. The sensor will need to be calibrated so it knows where the door is but is a very helpful feature if your door is not heavy enough to close on its own. Or if you have kids, they can never close the door all the way for some reason.
Smart Keypad. This is an additional cost but allows you to have a key pin to access the lock. That pin code can also be sent to guests giving them access with their own code. The Smart Keypad grants access when you might not have a key or your phone with you.
August also offers a theft replacement guarantee. If the device is stolen, they will see that it is replaced.
Is the August Smart Lock Weather Proof?
This lock is not intended for outdoor use. There really are not many instances when the lock will be exposed to the elements as it is designed to attach to the interior side of your door. August does say that the lock has been tested in all extreme weather types, which is great to know, but chances are it will never experience them.
Here are conditions they specifically pointed out:
Operating Temperatures: 32-104F
Storage Temperatures: -4 to 158F
Operating Humidity: 10 to 85% Non condensing
Storage Humidity: 5 to 90%
Can I switch a Guest to an Owner?
Yes, you can switch a guest to an owner. It is pretty simple too. Select the guest from the guest list within the app. On the guests’ edit page, simply select the owner and update the setting. Just like that, your guest now has owner access to the smart lock.
What if I lose my phone?
If you happen to lose your phone or have it stolen, don’t worry, there are still options. You will have to log into your account online at august.com/lostphone. Here you will report your phone stolen and be able to remove access to that device.
You will still have access with your physical key or can log into your account with another phone. Also, sorry about your phone… we’ve all been there.
Is the August Smart Lock Compatible With All Deadbolts?
