If you are new to Fire TV options, you will likely have many questions about connections and ease of use.  In the past, many devices required the use of a cable provider to stream to your TV.  Fortunately, times have changed, which means the tech needs have also changed.

Fire TV Cube does not require the support of a cable provider to access all of your favorite shows.

In this article, you will learn how the Fire TV Cube works without using a cable provider.

What is Fire TV Cube?

The Fire TV Cube is a device that allows you to stream your favorite shows directly to your television. This device is more advanced because it allows you to control everything with your voice through the Amazon Alexa app

What Do I Need to Hook Up Fire TV Cube?

You may be wondering how Fire TV Cube is hooked up to allow the streaming of your favorite shows without a cable provider.  Unfortunately, you can’t just hook up the Fire Cube and expect it to work.  There are things you need to have in place to use a Fire TV Cube.

Wifi:  You will need to have reliable internet and wifi connection to use Fire TV Cube. If you do not have an internet connection with wireless capabilities, you cannot use Fire TV Cube.

HDMI Cable:  While you don’t need to have a cable TV provider, you will need to have an HDMI cable to connect the Fire Cube to your television set.  The connection to the TV is not wireless.

Alexa App:  To use Fire TV Cube to its full potential, you will want to download the Alexa App.  This will allow you to use Fire TV Cube without the remote.

Can I Keep My Cable Box?

Perhaps you are not interested in eliminating cable from your home and just want to stream shows that cable may not provide.  If this is the case, you can use Fire TV Cube along with your cable box.  You can likely control your cable box through the Fire TV Cube.

How Can I Control My Cable Box with Fire TV Cube?

The cable box and Fire TV Cube are two separate devices that can easily work together with simple steps.

  1. Attach the small box called an IR Blaster to your Fire TV Cube.  The IR Blaster will allow you to connect your cable box and Fire TV Cube. An IR Blaster is included in the box.
  2. Once you have the connection made, you will move to your settings menu and select adding equipment.  From this list, you are going to select cable.
  3. After you have selected the cable option, you will follow the steps on the screen to choose the correct cable provider.
  4. Choose the correct input with your TV remote before trying to use the Fire TV Cube.
  5. When the cable is correctly set up, you will use your Fire TV Cube remote to control the cable box.

Do All Cable Boxes Work?

You may be wondering if all cable boxes can be controlled with the Fire TV Cube.  It is estimated that nearly 90% of all cable boxes can be controlled with the Fire Cube TV device.  If you find yourself with the message cable not found, it may indicate that your cable provider is not supported.

Unfortunately, if you cannot find your cable provider on the list, you may not be able to use the Fire TV Cube to control your cable box. Before going through the process of beginning the setup process, it would be best to check the list Amazon provides to show you the providers that are supported.

You will likely be able to connect your Fire TV Cube to your cable box, but there are some things that you need to keep in mind as you begin using your Fire Cube to control the cable.

Capabilities:  You may find that not all Fire TV Cube capabilities work with your cable box.  Not all cable boxes are equipped to recognize the IR connection.  If this is the case with your cable box, you will only use the remote to control your cable box.

Alexa: If you are using an older TV, you may discover that you cannot use Alexa to give the tv or cable box commands.  In this situation, you will need to use the remote.

Space: Many people like to use Fire TV Cube because it doesn’t take up a lot of space in their entertainment area. If you use it in conjunction with your cable tv provider, you will still need to have the cable box. For some people, this may seem to be too cluttered in your entertainment area.

Final Thoughts

Fire TV Cube can be an amazing addition to your entertainment system. It doesn’t require the use of cable to provide streaming, but you can likely use your Fire TV Cube to control your current cable box.
