Do WiFi Extenders Work With Xfinity?

Last Updated Aug 11, 2022
wifi extender

Xfinity Internet is an internet service offered by Comcast Cable Communications, LLC, the largest cable internet service provider in the United States. Many customers tend not to upgrade their routers or modems and use the equipment they rented from Xfinity. This might not be ideal, so do WiFi extenders work with Xfinity?

Most WiFi extenders will work with Xfinity Internet. WiFi extenders act as a relay station that will increase or extend your home’s WiFi network range. This will allow your WiFi network to cover dead spots or hard-to-reach spots in your network’s coverage area.

There are a ton of different WiFi extenders available on the market in 2022. Most models will work with your Xfinity modem router combo or connect via a third-party router to your Xfinity internet provided by your Xfinity modem. Any model of WiFi extender will likely work, but there will be a short list of some of the most popular ones below.

Do WiFi Extenders Work with Xfinity?

There are many different WiFi extenders, but the easiest to connect to an Xfinity network is Xfinity’s own xFi Pod WiFi Extender. Other WiFi extenders will work but will need more effort to set up. Xfinity has streamlined installing and setting up the WiFi extenders via the Xfinity mobile app. However, you pay a premium price for it.

WiFi extenders do work with Xfinity. Xfinity makes an easy-to-install WiFi extender called the xFi Pod WiFi Extender that can be installed via the Xfinity app. Other WiFi extenders will be more involved to install but will likely be much cheaper in the long run.

WiFi extenders are essentially just small relay stations for your WiFi network. By placing the WiFi extender near the edges of your router’s broadcast area, you can extend the range of your WiFi network depending on the broadcast power of the WiFi extender you are using. WiFi extenders are great for large houses or spaces needing WiFi internet coverage.

Popular WiFi Extenders to Use with Xfinity Internet

These are the most popular WiFi extenders to use with Xfinity Internet. It is important when buying a WiFi extender you pay attention to the speed and range the extender advertises. A large range will cover a larger area and extend your home’s network further.

  • xFi Pod
  • TP-Link WiFi 6 Extender
  • TP-Link AC2600 WiFi Extender

The speed limitations depend on the speed of your internet plan. You want to buy something that covers your plan’s advertised speed.

xFi Pod

The xFi Pod is Xfinity’s brand of WiFi extenders. The xFi Pod creates a mesh network of WiFi broadcasting devices in your home. The xFi Pod can just be plugged into an outlet about two-thirds of the distance from your WiFi router and the area you want to cover.

You can use one to cover a two-story house and two xFi pods to cover a 5+ room house.

Xfinity sells the xFi Pod for $119 for one or $199 for two.

TP-Link WiFi 6 Extender

TP-Link is a trusted name and one of the powerhouse companies in computer networking. The TP-Link WiFi 6 Extender is TP-Link’s most popular model of WiFi extender and covers around 1500 sq. ft. and supports up to 30 devices connected at once.

It supports speeds up to 1.8 Gbps. It retails for $99.99 and has a 4.5-star review on Amazon with over 700+ reviews.

TP-Link WiFi extenders do have one drawback, though. If you aren’t using a TP-Link router, your WiFi extender will create a separate network when connecting to your WiFi extender versus your main WiFi router.

If you want to share files or computers across the network, this will create problems where you would have to share the devices across different networks.

TP-Link AC2600 WiFi Extender

The TP-Link AC2600 WiFi Extender is similar to the WiFi 6 Extender, but it supports faster speeds. It has a Gigabit port for faster ethernet connections. It also supports up to 2600 Mbps speeds. It retails for $149.99 and is rated 4-stars with over 10,000+ reviews on Amazon.

How to Connect an xFi Pod to Your Xfinity Router

Xfinity has made connecting their xFi Pod WiFi Extenders to your Xfinity router simple. Setting these up is the quickest and easiest option if you have an Xfinity network. You will likely yield the best results with the xFi Pods.

  1. Download the Xfinity app for your mobile device
  2. Plug in your xFi Pods in a location that is about two-thirds between your main WiFi router and the desired area that needs better coverage
  3. You want to ensure your xFi Pods connect to the main router and not another xFi Pod for the best results.
  4. Enable Bluetooth on your mobile device and sign in to Xfinity in the Xfinity app
  5. Select the Account icon in the top-left corner of the Xfinity app
  6. Tap Activate xFi Pods under the Devices subsection of the menu
  7. Select your xFi Pods
  8. Select Get Started
  9. Follow the on-screen directions to finish setting up your xFi Pods.

You should now have a larger WiFi coverage area. Once you have your WiFi extenders installed and activated through the Xfinity app, you can move them to a different outlet and change the location of your xFi Pods to find better positioning if necessary.

Most WiFi extenders will work with your Xfinity network, but the xFi Pods will often yield the best results as they were designed to work with the Xfinity network in particular. Purchasing another brand of WiFi extender might cause separate networks and create problems depending on how you use your home’s network and if there are devices sharing files on the network.
