Wyze may only have three cameras, but are they capable of being webcams? Webcams already come on certain laptops and computers, and yet there are other reasons as to why you may want to consider getting an external webcam.

Can you use Wyze Cam as a webcam? You can use Wyze Cam as a webcam if you have the correct firmware, a USB 3.0 A to A cable, and a Wyze Cam v2 or Wyze Pan Camera.

Find the correct firmware here on Wyze’s website. Just a heads up that if you can afford to buy a webcam, you should. Wyze has stated directly that its webcam firmware is not going to receive updates, enhancements, or bug fixes. Keep reading to find out more.

Some Wyze Cams Can Work as Webcams

Wyze Feature 2

Wyze Cam is not designed to be a webcam. However, if you don’t want to buy a webcam, there is a work-around to make the Wyze Cam v2 and Wyze Cam Pan work as a webcam. Other versions of Wyze Cam cannot be used as webcams.

Check out this video to learn all about the webcam work-around for Wyze Cam v2 and Wyze Cam Pan.

It’s important to note that Wyze Cam cannot function as both a security camera and a webcam. Once you install the webcam firmware onto your Wyze Cam, the camera will no longer connect to the Wyze app. Features such as pan and tilt will no longer work. To use your Wyze Cam as a security camera again in the future, you would have to reinstall its original firmware.

Requirements to Convert Wyze Cam to a Webcam

Here are the things you will need to make your Wyze Cam work as a webcam:

  • Wyze Cam v2 or Wyze Cam Pan
  • Wyze’s webcam firmware
  • A microSD card with at least 32GB
  • A USB 3.0 A to A cable
  • A Windows or Mac computer

Click here to purchase an A to A USB cable from Amazon. A USB C to A cable may work as well, but it may not. USB C to A cables are used commonly as charging cables for personal electronic devices, so you likely have one in your home already. If you have a C to A cable, you can try using that first. If it doesn’t work, you will need the A to A cable.

You will need a microSD card to install the webcam firmware onto your Wyze Cam. Wyze makes their own 32GB microSD card, and you can purchase it here. However, any microSD card that’s 32GB or more will work.

How to Set up Wyze Cam as a Webcam

Follow the steps below to perform the Wyze webcam work-around:

  1. Insert the microSD card into your computer.
  2. Download the Wyze webcam firmware for your Wyze Cam v2 or Wyze Cam Pan.
  3. Open the downloaded zip file.
  4. Drag and drop the “demo.bin” file onto your microSD card.
  5. Eject the microSD card from your computer.
  6. Unplug your Wyze Cam, and insert the microSD card into the bottom of the camera.
  7. While holding down the Setup button, plug the camera back in the power outlet.
  8. Keep holding the button until the light on the camera is solid blue. Then, release the button.
  9. Wait 3-4 minutes for the camera to reboot. When the light is flashing blue, the camera is ready.

Using Wyze Cam as a Webcam

After the setup process is complete, the Wyze webcam is ready to use with your computer at any time. Connect the camera to your computer using the USB A to A cable. The power cable is not required as the USB cable will power your camera.

Once your webcam is connected, you can use it with a variety of video calling software. In the video calling program you are using, change the camera source to “HD USB Camera”. You will then see the video feed from the Wyze Cam. Adjust the camera position manually as needed to get the view you want.

The microphone and speaker on the Wyze camera will work when using it as a webcam. However, the audio volume may be low, and the quality may be poor. You can use your computer’s built-in microphone and speaker, a headset, or an external microphone for better audio quality. Make sure to change the audio source in the video software you are using.

Wyze Webcam Compatibility

Remember that Wyze Cams are not really webcams, so they may not work with all apps or websites. It is confirmed that Wyze Cams work as webcams with the following apps and platforms:

  • Zoom
  • Skype
  • Google Hangouts
  • Cisco Webex
  • GoToMeeting
  • BlueJeans by Verizon

If you’ve converted your compatible Wyze Cam to a webcam, but it’s still not working with any of the above apps, your computer software may be too old. The Wyze webcam has only been confirmed to work with the following computer systems:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows 10
