If you have an Amazon Fire TV Cube, you probably know these little streaming devices are pretty spectacular. Specifically, the Cube contains over one million TV shows, movies, games, and a variety of other entertainment options, all while being able to be controlled by your own voice through the Google Alexa or Echo device. However, if you have lost your Fire remote, you are probably curious: can you set up the Fire TV Cube without a remote?

Unfortunately, it is currently impossible to set up or even re-setup your Fire TV Cube after a reboot without the Fire remote. While you can use the Cube if it is already fully set up without the remote through the Amazon Fire app or your Alexa, it is a necessary tool for installation.

Thankfully, replacement remotes are readily available on Amazon so you can set up or re-setup the Cube and begin or continue enjoying the immense streaming options on the Fire TV Cube. However, if have lost your remote and only want to be able to control your Cube without buying a new remote, there is another option.

Can You Set Up the Fire TV Cube Without a Remote?

You cannot set up your Cube without a physical Fire remote. But if you have it set up and do not want to buy a new remote if you have lost yours, you can download a Fire remote app on your Android or iPhone that you can use just like you would the remote for the Fire TV Cube.

How to Set Up the Fire Remote App

The first step in setting up the Fire remote app is downloading it. Luckily, whichever smartphone model you have should allow you to access an app store and easily download the Amazon Fire TV Remote.

Once you have done so, all you need to do is follow these simple instructions to set it up and pair it with your cube.

  • Ensure both your phone and the Cube are connected to the same wireless network.
  • Open the app and sign in to your Amazon account.
  • A list of available devices will be displayed, including the Fire TV Cube.
  • Once you have selected the Cube, a verification code will pop up on your television screen.
  • Enter that code into the app.

Your phone will now work exactly like the original Fire TV remote!

Now, of course, this still doesn’t help you with your setup problem. So, if you have ordered a replacement remote and now you want to learn how to set up your Fire TV Cube, we have the step-by-step directions you need.

How to Set Up the Fire TV Cube

The good news is, setting up the Fire TV Cube is extremely easy, and you should be able to complete the project in just a few minutes!

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Place the Cube at least one to two feet away from any speakers.
  • Connect the Cube to your television with the provided HDMI cable.
  • Plug in the power cord from the Cube to a nearby power outlet.
  • Install batteries in your (new) Fire remote.
  • Hold down the HOME button on the remote for 10 seconds.

(NOTE: this is the essential step that requires the remote for set up, even if you download the app, you will not be able to progress past this step)

  • Sign in to your Amazon account.
  • Amazon will send a verification code to your phone, enter the code on the screen.
  • From here, you will be prompted to enter your preferences and personal settings.

That is all there is to it! While it is a little frustrating that you need to order a remote for this one simple process, they can usually be delivered with next-day delivery from Amazon so you can get this amazing streaming device up and running in no time.

Final Thoughts

The Cube is a pretty technologically advanced device, and in fact, once you get it up and running, you will really never need to use the remote itself as the entire system can be controlled by only your voice with the Alexa feature.

However, you absolutely need a Fire remote in order to set up the Fire TV Cube. The same goes for if you reboot or restart the device, you will need the remote to re-setup the system.

So we have a bit of advice: we recommend putting that remote in a safe place after the initial set up and either using the Alexa option to control your Fire TV Cube or following the steps above and downloading the Amazon FireTV Remote app on your phone so you can be sure you always have it in case you need to reset your Cube!
