The Ring camera is a popular option for ensuring the security of your house, but does Ring record audio, and can it pick up conversations?

Depending on the model of your Ring camera, it may be able to record audio and pick up on conversations if the recording feature is enabled. However, it only records sound when it detects motion.

Many people reasonably feel such recordings are intrusive for a setting as private as a person’s home.

Continue reading to learn all about how the Ring can record private conversations and what you can do to prevent it.

Can Ring Pick up Conversations?

Seeing who is at the door by quickly looking at your mobile device is quite helpful if your Ring doorbell has video built in.

You can also use them for two-way audio with models that have microphones and speakers. As a result, you can converse with anyone nearby and listen in on what is going close to the camera.

However, this also means that:

  • The Ring can record anything you say or do if that feature is enabled.
  • And not only your Ring, but also your neighbor’s as well.
  • For example, if you talk about anything while walking by someone else’s Ring, it will probably pick up on your conversation, and you’ll be recorded.
  • The ability to record audio varies between different models, but tests by Consumer Reports show that some Ring cameras can record up to 20 feet away.

When the recording function on some Ring devices activates, a tiny red LED light often shines so you can tell if you’re being recorded.

Configuring Your Ring Camera

Ring cameras can be installed inside or outside your house and are simple to set up.

The following steps will help you configure your ring camera:

  • Decide where to place your camera.
  • From the camera’s base, remove the mounting bracket.
  • Put the bracket in the location you prefer.
  • Remove the camera from its packaging.
  • Secure it to the bracket.
  • Plug the camera’s power cable into an outlet after attaching it to the device.
  • Create an account on the Ring app after downloading it.
  • Follow the app’s instructions to connect your camera to the Wi-Fi network.

You can start using your camera as soon as it is connected!

After connecting, explore different features, set motion detection and night vision preferences, and select the notification types you want.

Using the Ring app, you can also choose the locations you want your camera to cover.

How to Prevent Ring from Recording?

Capturing video or audio at home is less alarming than having someone else record your conversations.

While you have no control over how others configure their device, you do have control over what you’re your device records.

Your Ring device will begin automatically recording video and audio as soon as it senses motion if, after configuration, you didn’t make any changes to the settings.

It keeps going for two minutes or till it stops picking up motion.

To stop the Ring from making audio recordings:

  • Launch the Ring app.
  • In the top left corner, tap the three lines.
  • Tap gadgets
  • Choose the device you want to modify.
  • Select Device Settings.
  • Select Privacy Options.
  • Switch off Audio Streaming and Recording by tapping it.

You may also change the video recording duration on wired Ring devices. Tap on Video Settings, followed by Video Recording Length, in the app’s Device Settings.

The recordings are accessible through the app for up to 60 days if you subscribe to Ring Protect.

Pros and Cons of Enabling Recording

To increase your home’s security, it’s a good idea to record audio along with the video.

You can have peace of mind by using audio recording because it allows you to hear and see what is happening.

Additionally, the Ring Protect Pro plan has some very cool features if you want your Ring to be on whenever motion is detected.

Although capturing audio in addition to video has numerous advantages, there are some disadvantages as well.

The biggest concern with the Ring cameras is privacy.

It is fair that you might feel uneasy with the Ring recording any of your conversations, even though Amazon takes security very seriously.

You can always switch off the Ring doorbell’s recording feature if you don’t feel comfortable with it recording your conversations.

Conclusion

Ring cameras are some of the most well-liked cameras for recording events.

All Ring cameras automatically capture audio in addition to video.

If you’d prefer to disable this function, though, you may.

While there are many reasons to record audio in addition to video, some people feel that doing so would be too intrusive.

So it’s good that customers have the option to disable it.
