Can Echo Studio Be Used for TV?

Last Updated Nov 11, 2021

Amazon’s biggest, loudest, and most advanced Alexa speaker, the Echo Studio, must be one of the best speakers in its class on the market. Its features and capacity make it a truly impressive piece of kit for its size and price. Amongst many cool new stuff the Echo Studio has to offer, you may be wondering, “Can Echo Studio be used for my TV?”

Yes. The Echo Studio is equipped with a 3.5mm mini optical line-in that can connect to your TV, supports a Bluetooth wireless connection to compatible electronics, and a Wi-Fi connection if your TV is equipped with Fire TV.

The only problem is that you’ll be obviously physically plugged to your TV like Sonny (the good robot from I, Robot), and not all devices will be compatible with the wireless connection of the Echo Studio. If you want to know more about which devices to use, then keep reading for all you’ll need to know about your Echo Studio and TVs.

Is Echo Studio Compatible With TV?

Now let’s talk about its TV compatibility. Like its predecessors, the Echo Studio is designed to connect any part of the home and any electronic device. Having Alexa voice control built-in, you can control your sound handsfree from anywhere in your home.

The sheer sound production capacity of the Studio rules out the need for a large variety of surround speakers to be connected to your TV. Instead, the Dolby Atmos technology creates this immersive experience. Unfortunately, however, Dolby Atmos only works with Fire TV.

Connecting the Echo Studio to a TV via Bluetooth is possible directly or through an external receiver if they have Bluetooth built-in or are equipped with a Bluetooth dongle. Both the TV or receiver and Echo should be close to each other or in the same room to ensure ease of secure connection. Let’s review both options below.

How to Connect Your Echo Studio to a TV via a Receiver

To connect via a receiver:

  • Turn on the receiver and use the remote to go into the settings.
  • Switch the Bluetooth on.
  • Select the option of playing the audio exclusively through the Studio or in combination with the TV speakers.
  • Say, “Alexa, connect.”
  • Wait for the devices to connect. This might take a few seconds at most. Then, finally, Alexa will indicate that Echo is successfully connected.
  • Play a video and listen to sound coming from the Studio to test the connection.

How to Connect Your Echo Studio Directly to a TV

To connect directly to TV:

  • Turn the TV on and press the settings button on the remote control.
  • Turn on the Bluetooth.
  • Choose between the option of playing audio exclusively through the Studio or in with the TV speakers.
  • Say, “Alexa, connect.”
  • Wait for the devices to connect.
  • Play a video and listen to sound coming from the Studio to test the connection.

If you want to end the Echo’s use as a speaker with the TV or receiver, simply say “Alexa, disconnect.” Alexa will inform you that it is now disconnected from the electronic. You could remove the Echo as a paired device from the TV or receiver by going back to the settings.

How to Connect Your Echo Studio to a TV Through WIFI

To connect via Wi-Fi:

  1. Switch on your Fire TV.
  2. Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  3. Tap the button that says Devices and choose the plus (+) icon.
  4. Hit Set Up Audio System.
  5. Choose Combine speakers.
  6. Select Home Theater.
  7. Select your Fire TV. If it doesn’t show immediately, tap Rescan.
  8. Tap Next to add your Amazon Echo. If you use two Echos, you may pick one for the left and the other for the right.
  9. Select a name for the connection between the Studio and TV, and save it.
  10. Test that the sound plays through the Studio by using the Fire TV remote for Play Preview.

You can enjoy the Wi-Fi connection with Dolby Atmos for an immersive audio experience while listening to audio or displaying video.

Connecting Your Echo Studio According to the Model of Your TV

Now, the steps to connect Echo could differ depending on the model of your TV or receiver. In any case, you can refer to the operations manual of your TV or receiver to find how to connect Bluetooth devices.

Sometimes, in using a Bluetooth connection, there could be a lag in the audio compared to the video display. This phenomenon, called audio latency, happens because of the time taken for the audio transmission to get from the media source to the speaker.

So, suppose you have the option of pairing your Echo Studio with a Fire TV via Wi-Fi. In that case, you are less likely to experience audio latency because Wi-Fi transmission is faster than Bluetooth.

Connecting the Echo Studio via Wi-Fi to a TV is only possible with an Amazon Fire TV. The TVs thus compatible with the Studio are the Amazon Fire TV (4K, Lite, and 3rd Generation), Fire TV Cube (1st and 2nd Generation), and Fire TV (3rd Generation) with a feature called Time Synchronization.

Can You Pair Two Echo Studios Together?

Why, absolutely! This is one of the features that make smart speakers like the Echo very attractive to customers. It is possible to pair two speakers of the same model with the Amazon Echo, for example, two Echo Dots, two Studios, etc. The speakers have to be set up on the same Amazon account before pairing can be done.

To pair two Studios:

  • Turn on two Echo Studios and keep them not more than a meter apart.
  • Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  • Tap on Devices.
  • Tap on the plus (+) icon in the top corner.
  • Tap Set Up Audio System.
  • Tap Stereo Pair.
  • A list of the available Echo speakers will appear. Select your two Studios to pair together in stereo.
  • Select a channel for each speaker based on their positions in the room about where you are for Left or Right.

Once you are done with the setup, your new stereo pairing will appear as a speaker group in your app.

Amazon Echo only officially supports music streaming through the Alexa app when pairing. Pairing can also be kept on the Wi-Fi connection with a Fire TV as described above. You can also enjoy the immersive audio capabilities of the Dolby Atmos technology using this setup via phone or TV.

Enjoy superb sound with your Echo Studio smart speaker.
