Whether you are mixing the next hot music track for Spotify or cutting video content, having a high-quality speaker is essential. With its 5 speakers that deliver powerful bass, dynamic midrange, and crisp highs, also with it being less than $200, one might wonder if the Echo Studio can be used as a computer speaker.

The Echo Studio can be used as a computer speaker, however, the way Amazon designed the Echo Studio doesn’t seem like they want you to use it for this purpose. Even though you can use it as a computer speaker, you must jump through some hoops every time you’d like to switch between using Amazon Music and your computer as your audio input.

Even though you can use Echo Studio as a computer speaker, it may not be the best choice for you. In this article, we will discuss how to use Echo Studio as a computer speaker and why Amazon would make it so difficult for you to conveniently listen to music, video, and audiobooks.

Are All Computers Compatible with Echo Studio?

The Echo Studio is compatible with any computer that has an audio output jack that’s compatible with the combination 3.5mm mini-optical Toslink. As devices rely more on Bluetooth and cloud technology to transmit sound to external listening speakers, some computers these days are being produced without the 3.5mm/optical jack. If your computer doesn’t have this type of audio output, the Echo Studio cannot be used as an external speaker for your computer.

If you are dead set on using the Echo Studio as a computer speaker, but your computer does not have the compatible sound output jack, you could use a Bluetooth receiver to connect your computer to the Echo Studio wirelessly. This is extra work and an extra device you’ll need to purchase, however, it will work.

Echo Studio’s Audio Input Jack

Echo Studio is equipped with a combination 3.5mm mini-optical Toslink that allows you to plug in any device using that type of output. You will need to provide your own cord because one is not included in the box. Amazon does a great job of creating amazon products for the home, however, the Echo Studio has one major design flaw: you can’t tell Alexa to switch between the audio input jack and Amazon Music or Prime Video.

How to Use Echo Studio as a Computer Speaker

As we mentioned, using the Echo Studio as a computer speaker is not as easy as telling Alexa to switch to external audio. That’s ok, we’ll walk you through it.

  • Unplug Your Echo Studio – Yes, that’s right, shut Alexa down right now by unplugging the power cord for your Echo Studio. She’ll forgive you when she boots back up. DO NOT turn it back on after it shuts down, we’ll tell you when it’s ok to wake Alexa up.
  • Connect Your Computer Cable to the Echo Studio – While the Echo Studio is powered down and taking a snooze, plug your computer to the optical / 3.5mm jack via audio cord that’s not included.
  • Power On Your Echo Studio – Once you have the audio cable connected to both devices, you are now ready to plug in your Echo Studio’s power cord and start using it as a computer speaker.

Why Should I Choose the Echo Studio vs Other Computer Speakers?

The Echo Studio can be a great addition to your computer audio experience, however, there are other options that might be better suited to your needs. We took a look at some of the Best Computer Speakers and compared them with the Echo Studio.

Conclusion

The Echo Studio can be used as a computer speaker, and purchasing one device to use Alexa as well as a computer speaker sounds like a great value. The main issue with using it as a computer speaker is the constant plugging and unplugging of your audio cable which will quickly ruin the connections in the audio input jack, making it much more difficult to use as an external speaker for your computer in the long run. If you don’t mind the extra hassle involved of switching between audio inputs, then the Echo Studio could be a great computer speaker, however, there are other speaker options that are better suited for this purpose.
