In our modern world of ever-present cyber technology, security is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of any consumer-based or commercial products. One such product, the SimpliSafe SimpliCam, is intended to provide protection and peace of mind for homeowners by allowing them to always monitor their homes remotely.

The SimpliCam uses some of the most secure encryption technology available. Due to the nature of cybersecurity, there is always the risk of a potential breach. However, the SimpliCam provides solutions, even if your system is hacked.

It is worth noting that SimpliSafe is not alone in products vulnerable to hacking. Even with the most secure technology, there is always the risk of tampering and breaches in security. With this in mind, I wanted to dig deeper into the security of SimpliSafe’s SimpliCam to ensure it would be the best tool for keeping my home safe and secure.

SimpliSafe SimpliCam: Features and Specifications

The SimpliCam is SimpliSafe’s answer to the rising need for indoor home security monitoring. They offer an outdoor kit, but the camera is intended primarily for indoor use. For those unfamiliar with the product, here’s a quick look at some of the features of the SimpliCam:

  • HD Video and Audio
  • 24/7 Free Live Streaming
  • Motion Alerts
  • 120° Diagonal Field of View
  • Night Vision and Motion Detection
  • Standalone Device (SimpliSafe Base System not required)

Though the SimpliCam requires a Wi-Fi connection to communicate, it can be configured remotely through the associated SimpliSafe app. With these smart features in mind, you may be asking, “What steps does SimpliCam take to prevent security breaches?”

To better understand how your SimpliSafe system communicates, let’s look at how the SimpliCam handles sensitive information transmitted to your devices.

How Does SimpliCam Protect My Data?

Unsurprisingly, SimpliSafe goes to great lengths to ensure their products are the most secure on the market.

According to their website, the SimpliCam “protects your video feed with the same level of encryption used by banks to protect their accounts.” Bearing this in mind, let’s look at some of the specifics.

Privacy Shutter

The SimpliCam offers a unique hardware feature, designed to protect your home from prying eyes, even if someone were to hack the device itself.

As the name implies, the Privacy Shutter is a stainless steel shutter that can be remotely opened or closed from your mobile device to physically cover the lens of the SimpliCam. You can close it while you’re home or simply want privacy, ensuring that even if the device is hacked, the intruder would be unable to see through the camera.

End to End Encoding

SimpliCams communicate with the SimpliSafe system using end to end encryption (or E2EE), which is widely considered one of the most secure encryption methods currently available. This means that only the intended recipient of the communication can decrypt the data, ensuring that your information is safely transmitted.

E2EE is designed to combat unwanted surveillance and potential security breaches, making the SimpliCam more secure.

Bank-Level Encryption

In addition to E2EE, SimpliCam offers 256-bit encryption for data communicated over a network or internet connection.

According to Techopedia, with 256-bit encryption, “a hacker or cracker will require 2256 different combinations to break a 256-bit encrypted message, which is virtually impossible to be broken by even the fastest computers.”

SSL Security

“Secure Sockets Layer,” or how it’s more commonly known, SSL, is a term that gets used often when describing website encryption security. It’s a digital certificate that ensures authentication for websites and allows for an encrypted connection for the user. It is primarily designed to securely transfer data while avoiding potential security breaches.

Potential Security Risks with SimpliCam

Given all the security measures taken by SimpliSafe, you may be wondering if there are any potential security risks by using a SimpliCam. Though SimpliCam uses some of the most encrypted communication methods currently available, it still communicates wirelessly and is thus vulnerable (at least theoretically) to a security breach.

Additionally, if you use the SimpliCam in conjunction with your SimpliSafe system, you may be vulnerable to hacking. Though extremely difficult given the high levels of encryption used by the devices, a hacker can potentially obtain an encrypted PIN, thus giving access to your SimpliSafe system.

Fortunately, the SimpliCam’s additional Privacy Shutter adds an extra “unhackable” level of security for your home.

Final Thoughts

In modern times, with enough time and energy at one’s disposal, almost any digital device can be hacked to a certain degree. The SimpliCam, however, through its multiple levels of encryption and security, would be extremely difficult to hack (if not virtually impossible considering the addition of the hardware Privacy Shutter).

If you’re looking for ways to monitor your home securely, the SimpliCam is an undeniably promising choice.
