Since I got my first Apple Watch way back when, I have very rarely worn anything else on my wrist. I love the thing and take full advantage of all of the features I possibly can. There is just something about not having to dig in my pockets to find my phone to see what that new notification was.

Having the ability to control my home from my watch is one of those features I really love. Whether I am home or away, I have control over most of my house right on my wrist.

But let’s be real, some smart devices make a whole lot more sense than others for your smartwatch. A thermostat apple watch app has so much more value than say a Firestick remote control. As the screen is so much smaller on your watch, the design of these apps needs to really be boiled down to the bare minimum.

With that in mind, we see the most value in certain types of smart devices with Apple smart watch apps:

  • Smart Thermostats
  • Smart Locks
  • Smart Lights
  • Smart Garage Door Openers

Why Use The Apple Watch?

Apple watches have both wi-fi and data plans available. They can talk to your smart home devices through Bluetooth or geofencing based on your location. I have the Apple watch 3 and it is basically a small cell phone on my wrist. Perfect for remote controlling of my smart home.

Smart learning thermostats can use your watch or phones location to learn when you are home and away. When you are not home, the thermostat will adjust the temperature accordingly. No more heating or cooling your home when you are away from the house, saving you some money.

Smart locks have the ability to unlock when they sense your watch or phones presence. This is pretty helpful if you are a runner and don’t want to take your phone on your morning jog. Your Apple watch can be your keys.

Smart lighting is interesting on the Apple watch. If you are the type that loves using your voice assistant, you may not see all of the value here. If not, you can set scenes right from your wrist. Bed time scene? Set it from your watch.

This one is pretty similar to your smart lock. Just having the ability to open your garage from your watch is just easy, especially if you don’t have your phone on you.

There are, of course, many more smart devices that could be beneficial to control from your Apple watch. These are our favorite! Let’s take a closer look at some of the devices and how Apple watch apps work with these devices.

Our Favorite Apple Watch Apps

Philips Hue

Philips Hue is one of the biggest names in smart lighting and rightfully so. They make a great product with over 16 million different colors you can choose from.

With the Hue Apple watch app, you can set scenes or change the mood of the lights in your home. The Hue smartwatch app offers you another way to control your home lighting. Ya know, in case you lost your voice, phone and the ability to walk to your light switch.

August Smart Lock

The August Smart Lock is one of our favorite locks out right now. The Pro version connects to the interior side of your deadbolt and allows you the ability to control your lock from anywhere.

This lock even has auto lock and auto unlock, a feature that basically automatically opens the lock when your phone is near. The best part of the August Smart Lock is that same feature is offered on the Apple watch.

Yes, you can now unlock your front door with just your smart watch.

You will also get alerts and notifications right to your watch. If you want to see if the door is shut and locked, check it right from your watch. You will need DoorSense to see if the door is open. It’s a small device that comes with the newer August locks and senses the position of the door.

If you have multiple locks in your home, you will be able to control each of them independently from your watch.

ecobee thermostat Apple watch app interface

The ecobee thermostat is arguably the best you can buy. Some might say it is second to the Nest, but that’s up to you to decide. You can check out which one is our favorite here.

With the ecobee Apple watch app, you will have control over your homes temperature, humidity and fan settings right from your watch. You don”t even have to be home to check in on your home. Granted, these same features are offered on your phones app, it’s just way cooler to do it from your watch.

Your thermostat will also recognize the presence of your app when you are home and away. If you are away, it will adjust the temperature to save you some money and keep your home just cool enough (or warm enough) and return it to your preferred temperature when you return.

Honeywell Lyric

This list is full of smart thermostats. And it’s on purpose, having control of your homes temperature from your watch is a huge benefit. The Honeywell Lyric Apple watch is no different than the others. You have the ability to adjust the homes temperature from anywhere in the world.

You will have the ability to set schedules, raise or lower the temperature, set away mode and turn your fan on and off. The Honeywell Lyric thermostat will also know when you are home and away through geofencing and adjust the temperature of your house accordingly.

You can also get maintenance updates right to your watch.

MyQ Smart Garage

MyQ Smart Garage Apple watch app interface

Having a smart garage door opener is cool for sure, but having a smart garage door opener on your wrist is exponentially cooler. The MyQ by Chamberlain has an Apple smartwatch app and it just makes sense.

With the MyQ Apple watch app, you can open and close your garage door from your wrist. I like to go on runs and I dislike bringing my phone and keys with me. It’s just not comfortable. All I need is my headphones and my Apple watch as my watch will now be my way back into my garage.

That’s a big win in my book and just so convenient!

Nest offers a few different products you cant control from your Apple watch:

With the Nest app, you will be able to check and adjust your Nest thermostat, get notifications from your Nest Protect smoke detector and movement notifications from your Nest Camera.

You can also view your camera live but you will need another app like this one. These 3rd party apps will usually come with a small fee and are not maintained by the company itself.

Wrapping It All Up

Is the ability to control certain parts of your smart home from your app really that important? I mean, if you think about it, you may only be saving a few seconds by not having to dig into your pocket to get your phone.

In my opinion, the answer is yes a thousand times. Our smart technology was made to make our lives more efficient and easier. It is doing exactly that by allowing us to control our homes from or watches.

There are thousands of Apple smart watches out there and so many that would be valuable to you. We have listed a good place to start if you have any of these devices but it goes way deeper than these six devices.

I recommend doing some research yourself. When you are looking at new smart devices and their companion apps, check to see if they offer a smartwatch app too.

Again, this was just six devices. We would love to hear what your favorite smartwatch apps are in the comments!
